Barrel GrowSet

Planing a new grow, and right now designing new place where to grow. Planing to get a barrel and grow there.

1. Planing to get 225L -> ~59,4G plastic barrel. Drill few holes for ventilation and light, and make small doors.

2. 4 x PC vents, one on the top of the cool light tube, and rest of them for cool/warm/air circulation.

3. Smoke detector - don't know if I need it, but for safety, becouse it's a plastic barrel.

4. Light. I want to put only one light in a cool tube. And I need help for lamp. Thinking to get 250W HPS - would be enough for that size barrel? How many plants I can grow under 250W HPS?

5. Timers. For light and vents.

6. Measuring instrument. Temperature and humidity, for soil - pH meter.

7. Pots, soil ...

8. Seeds. MJ, small size (max ~60cm, indoor)

Small plan sketch (
blue - vent; yellow - light in a cool tube; blue line - cold air; red line - hot air)

What do you think? Are the vent in correct position? Can you give advice for point No. 4!

to man, very cool idea, but in my opinion it not really safe to use in that small are a hps(only if you have a really good ventilation)Iwould go with some cfl-s.
hope it all works 4 you bro-keep up the good work....

i've seen it done before but i dont know about flowering in a barrel. maybe just for clones
Found some good tips on this grow - HERE

He is using 150W HPS lamp and 3 other lamps, but I'm planing to use one light - can you suggest lamp for barrel?!

P.S.

I will use bigger barrel then Graehstone at his grow!

seems like a very interesting idea. I don't think the 250 in a cool tube will be to hot. If it is you could just get a higher cfm fan for the cool tube. Also I noticed he got a bit of burn on one of his plants from leaning on the cool tube to solve this you could put some chicken wire around the cool tube about an inch or 2 out so your plants would lean on that instead of the tube. Keep us posted on what you do :peace:

Then I will need kitchen net or other net!

I know which HPS to buy - 250HPS and make a cool tube. Temp have to be ok and light will be enough for flowering.

Now about CFL lamp - for vegging period. How many lamps I need for 225L barrel full lightening - and how many Watts?

Thanks gor your help!

I'm thinking its gonna be a PIA with the plants down deep. Pulling them out is gonna be a hassle once they get big.

One tip is to use a long funnel to water them. Like the ones for filling the auto transmission fluid you get at the auto parts store. I use them for a regular set up. Gets to the back plants nicely.

Watering - I hope there will be no problems with that.
And for pulling plants out - I will try to make good doors, big enough to take the plants out, and the doors will not screw up barrels shape.

I will put cool light tube in the center!

About vegging lights - yea, I will go for tube lights or CFL regular light. Found few ideas.

With Tube light, hope that 3 x 40W tube lights will be enough?!

With regular CFL 40W bulbs, and will go for the same amount - 3 x 40W.

Questions: 3 x 40W light will be enough? CFL floro light will be suitable for vegging period and clones?

Thanks!

Barrel idea is off.

Found good growcloset in good size.

And now I'm thinking to get good decent light! Planing to get Cool Tube with 400W HPS light (special for blooming and vegging)

I need info about temperature, becouse right now I need ventilation info. What kind of ventilators I need for cooltube? Will be enough if I use PC vents?

I will use thermostat for right temperature in closet - or I don't need it?

Will buy timer for light and for vents!

Thank you for help!

Now I have 1m2 growspace, and would use 250W HPS light for 5 plants!

What kind of ventilation do you recommend (PC vents for cold air in and hot air out? and regular vent for plants?)?!

And how how could be in the box using 250W HPS light?

Thanks!

if you have a good enough exhaust fan you shouldn't need intake fans just vents. and if your doing 5 plants under a 250 I would do the vertical light with no hood or a cool tube so you maximize the light you are using. just surround the light like you were going to do before.

And what about fresh air?

OK, then I will get good fan for 1m2 and one for plants.

I'm thinking to buy this reflector with Black Box ballast

of just hang the light over the plants, smth like that?

for fresh air just make a passive air intake and the exhaust will suck in the fresh air. I think hanging down would make better use of the light just make sure you get one that can go vertical. it would be the same basic principal as the barrel.

Made few sketches for light

Do I need reflector (in size - that the reflector covers almost all the box - made from reflector material) for the light bulb or I could put the light just hanging in a cable and just color sealing white?!

And about passive air tank, where can I found information about that fan, becouse I hear about it for the first time! Does the air tank have switch for blowing air out/in? Where I need to put it, if it takes out hot air and pulls cold from outside of the box, in the middle of the box?

Thank you for your help Nickbbad, and sorry for so many questions, I just want to make this growset with some success! :weed:

P.S.

One more idea for cooling:

vertical cooltube with 250HPS and PC vent (but where could I put PC vent, near the light, or outside the box?)

And again with reflector, do I need it, if I build cool tube, or white box top will be enough?

And resume for cool tube lighting: 1 x PC vent for cooltube (+ hot air); 1 x PC vent on the growbox bottom for fresh air; 1 x regular fan for plants.

Which idea would be effective?

Passive air intake is just a vent that allows air to flow in freely from outside the room the exhaust fan will suck enough air to pull air from the vents. the passive vents that suck in the cool air should be just above soil level in this case the exhaust should be above the light. The light should be in the center of the room vertical and the plants will grow around it.you will not need a hood because the light will be going out toward the plants in all directions . its basically a small vertical grow like this

except in a smaller place and with less plants. which was what the barrel was going to do in the first place. So basically its the same setup as the barrel. And you put the exhaust fan/s above the light outside the box. You can also do it other ways like a horizontal light and hood and your basic level bud canopy but I think the vertical is just more efficient.
