I have decided to upgrade to 2 1000 watt HPS lights. I am trying to decide if I should spend the extra money (which is a considerable amount) on buying air cooled light reflectors. Right now i am using 4 400 watt HPS "bare bulb" with a open reflector and heat has never been an issue in my grow room. Is there a real benefit to using the aircolled reflecor? I was told that you can get the light much closer to the canopy if the bulb in enclosed, HOw much closer? Is it really worth another $500.00 bucks? ANy feedback would be great - I am planning on hitting the hydro store today.

It is a tough decision, and mostly based on your own.
I didn't use them, but recently switched to them because I found them for $80 each. It made it easier for me to use the co2 gen, because there is less heat in the room from the lights. But the air cooled reflectors dont spread the light out as well as the parabolics I was using before. You have to think about buying a good fan as well as ducting, and where your gonna duct the hot air to, and your making more holes in your walls of your room. It was quite a lot of work and a lot of money switching, but I am glad I did.
I use ac to cool the room and I switched from 2 regular veg lights to 3 air cooled flower lights and the ac still doesnt run as often as with non air cooled. And yes you can get the lights pretty close to the tops. i think I was at about 18" before and now I am at round 8".
