alright gettin ready to start a new grow. having trouble deciding what light to get. im really thinking about a 250 watt mh for veg and 250w hps for flowering. my space is only about 3x3x3. would the mh and hps be a good idea or should i look into something else for such a small area? any help is appreciated

Metal halide (MH) grow lights emit light with a lot of blue in the spectrum, which holds good before flowerings stage,
High pressure sodium (HPS) grow lights emit the familiar orange or amber light you might see in street lighting. This light spectrum is the most effective for the flowering phase of growth.

Purchase BOTH MH and HPS or use T5's for vegging and HPS for flower. HPS will not alone supply the light spectrum plants need most during both the vegetative stage or growth and the flowering stage of growth.

wow great info brick top. im thinkin the best way to go is to just get the ballast and reflector ext. and a metal halide for now and when it gets closer to flowering time again i will just buy only the hps bulb

As long as the ballast you purchase will burn both MH and HPS light bulbs, a digital or switchable ballast, ... or you will have to pick one type of ballast or the other and then use either a conversion MH or conversion HPS bulb and neither are as good as the real ones.
