Hey I'm about to go out and buy some soil for my plants, that should be getting here soon! What's the best soil I can get? And what would I have to add into it, if anything.
I've heard that MiracleGro Organic Choice does good.

Thanks :leaf:

I'd try to find some Fox Farm Ocean Forest. It's rich in nutrients and such and it seems to be widely used among growers. I've been using it for my first grow and my plants are quite happy with it.

personally I have never used Mg, but for a newb i'd say its the best,
after a few harvests with that you might want to switch over to pro-mix, because you can add the nutes you want,
and the seedlings won't get so stressed from overfeeding
I guess I can only recommend the pm but its up to you whether or not to control the food.

its always a good idea to mix perlite, and vermiculite and some wood ash just so the roots can breathe easier.
sorry im not answering your question, but I believe Pro mix is the best.

You WILL get bugs with the MG Organic soil. They come in every bag - 100% guaranteed.

Do yourself a favor and get some Foxfarm soil.

picasso is rights, although in my first grow i used miracle grow and didnt have a problem until the last few weeks of flowering. I got a shit load of gnats. I used shaults or some shit this time. NEVER GET THAT SOIL

it came with a swarm of fruit gnats and its been a bitch getting rid of them. If you do get em go get a bag of sand and place tape around your grow and also fill some 2-liter caps with peroxide and put em around your grow room

FOX FARM OCEAN FORREST. thats all i gotta say.
actually all i gotta say is go hydro lol

If you do use MG soil, don't get creative with adding extra nutes...you'll burn them in no time.

I use ProMix BX with 10% worm castings. Jack's Classic brand ferts are simple to use & can be found cheap online. Start at 1/4 strength with any nute you get. Trust me, it doesn't look like a lot, but it doesn't take much.

As stated above, the Ocean Forest is loaded with all sorts of good stuff also.

I'd also say find a PH test kit of some sort...you'll be amazed what you learn on your first grow!!

I would highly suggest looking into some organic nutrients mate, if you are new, organic mediums can be quite forgiving for overnutrition and watering. Check out the links in my signature and have a look at some organic and soil/less mixes you can use. If you start with organics as fertilizer, you'll have a great idea of what is beneficial for your plants and their environment. Let me know if you need anything mate

My boyfriend picked up some Expert potting mix...anyone know anything about that?
We're looking into the Fox Farm stuff, since so many people seem to recommend it. lol
Anyone know of a place it can be bought at? Or can it just be purchased online?

If you can get the FF Ocean Forest, I would. It's easy to make ammendments to that soil to get a good mix and it contains tons of beneficial trace minerals. Good luck

I am using Miracle Grow Potting Mix (not Organic) and I mixed with with Miracle Grow Perlite (2:1). So far I am just adding water about once a week and I am entering my third week. This is my first grow. You can see my grow journal and judge for yourself.

For a pure noob, I personally think MG is best since it only costs $6 and can get it everywhere. I am sure FoxFarm is way better but I could not get my hands on it and it cost 3x more (not that $20 is alot of money).

Good luck but take a look my my thread, I am doing just fine with MG so far.
