I googled for maximum penalties for 'trafficking' in booze and smokes, but could only find a range of penalties for each offense...with 'imprisonment' being the max, but no maximum time. I wouldn't be surprised if those were fairly stiff too. Thing is, NOBODY is going to get max and excessive sentences will be appealed and reduced. 14 years is there to scare people out of the black market.
While this may be bad news for those who make their living off the black market, it works well for the vast majority.

So far, it's ok...and I think you're right...intimidation is the name of the game but how has that worked thus far? Other than being able to grow 4 plants, strict regulation and control now has to be used to make sure you follow that new rule....same shit different pile.

So pt 3 Licences and Permits, 62(1)....everyone who wants to produce has to make an application?
Im sure that wont be back logged. And whos to say what grounds for denial would be since everyone is allowed to. Besides the glaringly obvious reasons of course

Not a bad start to the legalization process, i guess. But most of it is just industry protectionsim. Its business legislation. And as such it aint bad.

But the aim was to eliminate the blackmarket and protect children and thats where this legislation completely fails. 100% failure on those two counts.

So... i just keep doing what im doing.

You cant legislate child safety and think magically all of a sudden children will be safe from something. How many kids get beaten every day because of alcohol, yet the gov makes tax from it and what was the last time you heard out rage from any gov official about child safety at home from alcohol abuse. What about smokes and parents smoking with their kids in the car or smoking while pregnant? You can't get any more toxic than that and no one does anything about it, oh oh yah taxes from cigs.

How the fuck can you even say it with a straight face, its about child safety when weed will be sold at retail store fronts.

Don't forget energy drinks that should only be sold to adults.... hell yesterday I watched an 11 or 12 year old buy 2 of the rockstar energy drinks. Seriously we are protecting our kids from a harmless fucking plant but don't give two shits about all the actual dangerous things children incounter on daily bases just my humble opinion. Like seriously they need to stop the ludicrous comment of protecting the children and say what they actually mean we are protecting our investments......

If children's safety is the main concern....maybe we should go after parents for feeding their kids crap fast food meals, and stocking the cupboards with endless amounts of junk food...its unhealthy for them. What about sitting in from a tv/monitor playing video games for hours on end, again super unhealthy...yet some parents use this unhealthy pastime as babysitters. Many parents are already exposing their children to products everyday that are deadly...all with the Govs blessing.

Some interesting tidbits I came across reading

Cannabis for Medical Purposes
Q17. Will a separate medical cannabis system continue to exist under legalization?

Yes, as recommended by the Task Force, the cannabis for medical purposes regime will continue to exist to provide access to individuals who have the authorization of their healthcare practitioner to use cannabis for medical purposes. The Task Force also recommended that the Government monitor and evaluate patients' reasonable access to cannabis for medical purposes during the implementation of the new law, and then evaluate the medical access framework within five years of implementation of the law, which the Government intends to do.

Q10. Is the 30 gram limit for all forms of cannabis, or are there equivalencies for things such as edibles?

Throughout the proposed Cannabis Act, possession limits are expressed in terms of dried cannabis. As such, the Government of Canada has developed equivalencies for other cannabis products that can be used to identify what a possession limit would be for those products.

These limits are largely based on equivalencies established in U.S. states where cannabis is legal such as Colorado or Washington State. They specify how other products such as liquids, solids/edibles, and concentrates equate to dried cannabis.

One (1) gram of dried cannabis is equivalent to:

  • 5 g of fresh cannabis,
  • 15 g of edible product,
  • 70 g of liquid product,
  • 0.25 g of concentrates (solid or liquid), or
  • 1 cannabis plant seed.

Q29. Will there be restrictions on THC concentration?

Health Canada is evaluating a number of approaches that could be used to effectively manage the concentration of THC in various cannabis products. This evaluation includes reviewing work that has been done in jurisdictions that have already legalized the use of cannabis.

It is the Government's intention to set regulatory requirements that would standardize the amount of THC that could be in a single portion of certain cannabis products (for example, how much THC could be in an edible product) and that THC amounts be clearly stated on product labels. In this way, consumers will have clear information to make decisions about consumption and the risks they are taking.

I also haven't found anything about limits to the amount of cannabis you can have at home......so it looks like there is no limit ?

Well at least that is good, pretty sure that'll make a few people happy.
