Barr Shifts in Support of Medical Marijuana

Gerry Smith
March 30, 2007
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Washington — Bob Barr, a former Georgia Republican congressman and anti-drug crusader, has become a lobbyist for the Marijuana Policy Project.
The switch marks the latest chapter in the surprising evolution of the four-term lawmaker from Georgia's 7th District since he lost his seat in 2002.
Once termed "the worst drug warrior" on Capitol Hill by the Libertarian Party, Barr joined the Libertarians last year because, he said, of the GOP's move "toward big government and disregard toward privacy and civil liberties."
Barr's move puts him in the unusual position of lobbying to overturn a law he sponsored.
In 1999, Congress passed a spending bill for the District of Columbia that included the so-called "Barr Amendment," which blocked the District from allowing medical marijuana use even though 69 percent of voters had approved a measure to legalize it.
Barr declined to comment for this story, but told the Politico publication that "in light of the tremendous growth of government power since 9/11, it has forced me and other conservatives to go back and take a renewed look at how big and powerful we want the government to be in people's lives."
Aaron Houston, the project's government relations director, said Barr, a former U.S. attorney, will bring "gravitas and credibility" to the project's lobbying operations, particularly among Republicans.
But Rep. Mark Souder (R-Ind.), who once stood by Barr in his opposition to legalizing medicinal marijuana, said he was dismayed. "It is personally disappointing to watch him change from prosecuting drug dealers to defending usage of their product," Souder said.

I think it's funny how conservatives are snatching at straws to save themselves politically. They are starting to figure out that they are no longer popular.

Conservatives whine, piss, bitch and moan on how inefficient government is, then they get elected and prove it.

the federally inspired taboo and stigma does seem to be living it's last days.

personally, i do think they are finally starting to realize the untapped potential of this issue. but i also believe they are realizing that it fits with conservative thought.

would you agree that medical use adheres to conservative ideals more so than modern liberal ideals?

(i am talking about medical use in terms of growing your own or having a caretaker grow it - NOT government dispensaries.)

Not really, it's just a ploy for him to get votes for a later election.
A Leopard doesn't change it's spots that fast.

He does know that standing on the side of medical marijuana will gain him votes... Did you know that Liberal radio plays NORML PSAs? Conservatives aren't going to let that happen.

BTW now that your on the subject of government administration of such things in your last post, Did you know that the overhead for government administering things like Medical care only has a 2.5% overhead as opposed to privatization, where the overhead has to be between 20% - 30%?
The reason that the overhead of privatizing is so much more expensive is because they have to pay stock holders, CEO's, CFO's ect. The Government only has to pay the doctors and the overhead comes from paying a paper pusher.

Dank, he's from Georgia...remember what i said a long time ago about the roach? it takes balls for him to do this and i don't think he is doing it just because it "might" pay off in an election.

i have never had a conversation with a conservative (preachers to cops) who did not conclude that the government has no business banning a plant or it's responsible, adult consumption. modern liberals (dems) however tend to see it as a cash cow and until they can come up with a scheme to squeeze it, they want to keep it illegal...

as far as NORML, they intertwine themselves with the leftist agenda too much. they was a time when they were advertising on VERY right websites. why would a Baptist church advertise a mormon event in the bulletin? if NORML will get back to the main issue with a truly "reform" stance, they will do much better across the board, imo.

where did you get those stats? did they take into account all the massive bureaucracy that precedes whatever final step this 2.5% comes from?

7x, as much as we have been screwed by Politicians over the years I am very suspicious of their intentions.

now i'm not as old as you so i don't have the years, but i have come to the conclusion, Dank, that it is their job to screw us. as long as there are people elected to make decisions affecting anyone other than themselves - people will surely be screwed.

the ones to watch out for are those who intentionally screw people.

Bob Barr spoke out against the patriot act while many were bitting their tongue. he attacked Republicans who toiled away trying to lynch Clinton.

imo, we need elected people who regard liberty and their convictions more highly than day to day polls. he would have my vote without this new revelation but if this helps him get a louder voice and more support then i'm all for it.
