Body Scanners In Airports

I found this little article here in Australia that I thought travellers who like to take their medication with them, well you still can, if you go to the extreme of putting it in your arse or pussy....

http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/technology/sci-tech/the-truth-about-airport-body-scanners-20091231-lkhb.html

Here are some questions and answers about the devices.
Q: How do these full-body scanners work?
A: The two main types of scanners are "millimeter wave" and "backscatter" machines. Millimeter wave units send radio waves over a person and produce a three-dimensional image by measuring the energy reflected back. Backscatter machines use low-level X-rays to create a two-dimensional image of the body.

Q: What sorts of things can they find?

A: The machines are designed to uncover what a physical pat-down could turn up but a metal detector wouldn't find. That includes plastic or chemical explosives and nonmetallic weapons in a pocket or strapped to someone's body.
The machines would also find guns, knives and other metallic objects that would set off a metal detector.

Q: What can they not find?

A: Generally, the machines can't find items stashed in a body cavity. So the scanners wouldn't stop at least one common smuggling method used by drug traffickers.

Q: How common are they at airports?

A: Because of fears that the scans infringe on travellers' dignity by revealing bodily contours, European officials have generally limited the machines to tests in airports or train stations.
In US airports, the Transportation Security Administration has begun expanding the use of full-body scanning machines, although passengers can opt for a physical pat-down instead. The TSA has 40 in place, just bought 150 and plans to buy 300 more.
Six of the machines are being used instead of a metal detector at airports in Albuquerque, N.M.; Las Vegas; Miami; San Francisco; Salt Lake City; and Tulsa, Okla. The other 34 are used for secondary screening of people who set off a metal detector in Atlanta; Dallas/Fort Worth; Denver; Detroit; Indianapolis; Jacksonville and Tampa, Fla.; Los Angeles; Phoenix; Raleigh-Durham, N.C.; Richmond, Va.; and two airports in the Washington area: Baltimore/Washington and Reagan National.

Q: Is there a way to make the scans less revealing?

A: The technology has evolved to reduce the clarity of identifying details. The systems blur faces, or they produce body images that look like chalk outlines.
Amsterdam's airport is moving ahead with full-body scanners after trying new software that projects a stylised image - rather than an actual picture - onto a computer screen. It highlights the area of the body where objects are concealed in pockets or under the clothing.

The TSA says it uses logistical methods to safeguard privacy. Full-body images are viewed in a walled-off location not visible to the public. The security officer assisting the passenger cannot view the image, and the officer who views the image doesn't see the passenger. If the officer viewing the image sees something of concern, he notifies the agent who is with the passenger to do further screening.
The machines can't store or print images, and the TSA says officers who view the images are not allowed to take cameras or cell phones into the screening rooms.

Q: How long does it take to be scanned?

A: The machines are getting faster but still can take up to 15 seconds to scan a traveler, which could make the process slower than using metal detectors.
TSA officials note that in some instances, these machines can be faster. For instance, people with medical devices that typically set off metal detectors wouldn't have to make multiple passes through the machine or be pulled aside for additional screening.

Q: Do security officials hope to use the full-body scanners on every person getting on a flight?

A: At the moment, that's probably not realistic - in the U.S. alone, there are 730 checkpoints with 2,100 security lanes at the nation's 450 airports, and there are thousands more lanes at airports around the world. Cost may be an issue - the machines can be $US130,000 ($149,000) to $US200,000 each.
Taking Amsterdam, where the machines are already in place, as an example: The airport's 15 scanners won't be enough to screen every US-bound passenger, so pat-down searches will still be used. It remains to be seen whether that strategy will be copied at other airports.

Q: Do the scanners pose health risks, especially for frequent travellers?

A: The TSA says the technology is harmless.
Millimeter wave energy is common in the world, and the TSA says the scanners produce far less energy than a cell phone. The X-rays in backscatter machines are weak; TSA says the radiation is equivalent to what a person gets in two minutes of flying on an airplane. If someone fears the technology, the TSA offers a physical pat-down.

So there you go.... :-)

Simple, put it in your check-in baggage...

I always carry mine in the check-in, a lot less risky.

I was also under the impression that they had dogs sniff the bags that you check in. At the very least they would x ray them I would think
thats what i thought, seein as im takin my xbox and its hacked, if i open it up again and throw say 4-5 compressed grams, would it show up as weed or just machine parts?

i don't think tehy can scan through the metal casing of an xbox unless they thought it looked suspicious . . . . . make sure you look like a game freak or something ;)

i'd like to know this myself. i have come up with numerous ways to hide the weed and the smell but i am concerned that a scan would show it. if there is a particular metal that makes this impossible i just may have the most awesome smuggling idea ever for an ounce or two. the xbox thing should work for a tourist but i'm not sure how common of a method that is and how hip they are to it. i plan on driving to canada soon and want to bring weed (i know it sounds silly but where i'm going i can't count on finding it), and the only thing that is concerning me is the possiblity of some sort of scan thing for my stuff being able to see through metal. but to uk grower, if i were you i would try to hide the weed in a small plain shaped metal thing so it would just look like the guts of the xbox. seeing through 1 layer of metal is one thing, but two might be more secure..

what about putting it in hollowed out peanut-butter? then you put it in a bag, put it in the pb, cover it with pb put it in your carry on with crackers. they cant x-ray the pb. i've done it.

dont they x-ray the bags and a dog sniffs them? how much can you put and where?
I'm not sure if they x-ray every check-in bag as there are often many of them...

As for dogs, not a problem as long as you take proper care packaging and vacuum sealing...

I've only carried at most a quarter, which is not hard to stash off in between stuff in the bag.

im gonna have to try this, im sure they x-ray every bag, im scared of the angles it could be scanned from, what would weed look like on an x-ray, would breaking it up into little say 1g cling filmd units thrown around the case do, the more ideas the better.

I used to know a guy ironically nicknamed sticky. Long story short, when he was in high school he jumped in the river in summer and landed freckle first on a submerged branch...hence the nickname.
I used to deliver a 4 pack per week to a lady who used to wrap it in glad wrap and compress the shit out of it with a rolling pin. 3 prophylactic's later this sticky character would transport the package into a certain "Stalag" in the old "chub safe"....I don't know how that was relevant but now you all know.

Scanners at airports not only X-ray, detect metal and scan surfaces but also "sniff" the air for a wide variety of compounds. Airport security are also trained to profile people who might sick, intoxicated or likely to be carrying illegal substances. With the amount of scanners, dogs, customs, fun police and airport security personnel employed to stop you from having a good time, infecting people and blowing things up now days I personally wouldn't risk it. They grow weed all over the world (definitely in Fiji), it doesn't take long to find someone with a Tool t-shirt or dreadlocks etc to point you in the right direction...... bongsmilie

This would be my final spot on it too... especially if you know your going to be somewhere where pot is a little bit more accepted that it is here, just profile a stoner and ask =p... However, if you absolutely insist on bringing some.... Get a half or an O, in a baggie, in a condom, back in the box, in your luggage, under the plane =). Dogs can't sniff through Latex
