you probably have gnats, i recommend letting your soil dry out atleast an inch down to help kill off eggs and spraying a pesticide of some sort to combat the adult gnats.

theres also pesticides that can be applied into the soil to help kill them, but this route seems not possible by what you describe.

Don't use pesticide. use Mosquito dunks. You can find at most hardware stores. They are technically organic and kill the gnat larvae. Yellow sticky traps for the adults.

probably gnats, BT or mosquito dunks take a few to days to work, if you have a home depot in the area they sell nematodes.

They also sell DE (diatomaceous earth)at home depot, top layer of that on the soil keeps them out.

If you want to have fun killing the SOBs, get a Pinguicula moranensis, carnivorous butterwort from Mexico. Little bastards get stuck on the leaves and slowly digested. Otherwise, put out dishes of soapy water to catch the adults. Or make your own sticky traps by smearing vaseline on plant label stakes and put one in each pot. And of course, make sure you're not overwatering.

Soapy water worked like a charm put a dish in there and two hours later saw 6 bugs in there :) im going to put a couple small ones throughout to keep em away :)

From what I've read they lay eggs in ur soil. Adding a layer of sand at the top makes the little larva die when they try and move thru it. I used the sand and it works. But after u water ur plant u may need to ad more.
