Bubbler Clone Transplant Question

I have not had a successful clone yet. I got close with a bubbler and after I transplanted it it died. i think the soil was to "hot" with ferts and probably burnt the roots up.

My question is can I just transplant a clone with 1/2 inch roots to a seed starting mix like Jiffy. Something with no fertilizers. After transplanting... maybe water with a very weak fertilizer.

Thought I would ask before I kill anymore clones.
