Okay,

Here's what we're looking at on day 53.

Pic 1) Here's the best shot of the "main" colas. You can see the discoloration on many of the leaves, particularly the higher up the cola you look. Some have a slight yellowing, others have more of a bronzing color to them. Leaf tips are curled upwards the higher up you go as well. I believe this to be the result of possible over-heating that may have been spurred by the Gravity but I'm far from 100%.

You can probably make out the twine that I have supporting the weight of those long colas. It's not that they're really "fat" colas per say...they're just REALLY heavy. I'm assuming that this is the gravity's effect (as marketed).

Pic 2) This is the longest of the colas that's weight is being supported by the white wire leading from the hps. It's about 15" long :-P. The exact amount of light penetration that I can get from a 400wHPS (more on my light penetration issues later).

Pic 3) The left side of the grow tent. More of the same.

Pics 4,5) These 2 are trying to show the smaller colas that look healthier overall and more mature. You can tell which ones I'm referring to as they'll have the green leaves with no signs of stress at all ;-)

I should explain the strange whiteish cirlces that you may be seeing on many of the leaves. These are actually nutrient spots. See...:dunce:...my screen isn't high enough to allow me to pour my nutients in gallon jugs underneath the screen. So, I have to feed from above, inevitably getting nutes on the leaves themselves.

If you remember from earlier, I was bitching that I had made the screen too tall. Not the case in many aspects of my grow as I have learned. :wall:

The net result of these smaller colas will be slightly bigger than popcorn sized nugs after they have dried and cured. In retrospect, I should've chopped them very early on after seeing the discrepancy in the growth rates. :-(

And remember....I had germinated and started up on my White Rhino fem'd seed.....

Pics 6,7) Here she is. There's a little discoloration going on here as you can see but nothing that I'm too concerned about right now. Nutes were started last week and she has responded wonderfully, almost tripling her growth in one week. She's a little over 2 weeks old now I think (I have to go back and check). She will either be topped or fim'd and vegged so that I can get some clones. And this time, I'm going to make them live.

I had to dump the other clone attempts on the BV. It had been 4 weeks, nothing looking good, and they were dying one way or another. I'm disappointed to lose the BV strain. It's been really, really good to me. No smell. Easily trainable. Cloning started good before I jumped the gun and transplated. But then again....Attitude will always be willing to ship me new seeds of that strain ;-)

That's all the pics for today. In the next post, I'll explain some of the valuable lessons I've learned today by looking at this strain in it's later stages.

Today's Activities:

A large portion that the main colas have not filled out the way that I expected them to has to do with my previous thinking about the lollipopping.

Long story short, I did not do this frequently or aggressively enough.:-(

So today, I cut alot of the lower growth off. At least as much as I could reach with the screen being as low as it is and the tent walls being as restrictive as they are. These little nugs had trichs on them so I can make use of them at least. But this was essentially wasted growth. All this could've been growth added to those main colas. Just needed to cut the flowering portion of those areas and keep the fan leaves for energy production.

One mystery occurred in this process though...a lone seed was found

Not really sure how this happened. The plant doesn't look hermed to me (as far as I can see). Maybe there was just a spec of cross pollination from my previous auto grow? Tough to tell at this point either way.

In the last post, I mentioned that I should've cut even the smaller colas which appear to be very healthy right now. My reasoning behind this lesson has to do with the "light penetration" issue I mentioned earlier.

See, with my 400w HPS, the light is efficiently used in the following dimensions:

3' by 3' by 15" depth

So, if you picture a box with those dimensions, I absolutely NEED to keep my cola growth within that 15" depth mark. That's not to say that the light needs to be 15" away from the canopy. Just that I need to make a mental, or even physical, mark of the 15" top of the cola to the 0" bottom of my canopy marks.

Anything outside of that 15" range (or even outside of the 3' range) needs to be cut. It's merely wasted energy. Not completely wasted mind you. Like I said, those little nugs I've been cutting today are healthy looking and have trichs. But the light usage to reward ratio is worse there than it is with that 15" cola that I have.

By recognizing these growth sites early on, and lollipopping them on a weekly basis, I could get much better results on those main colas and I would expect a better yield and uniformity in the grow.

Now, this all comes back to making my screen taller. It would've been near impossible for me to get to many of those growth sites outside of the 15" range in the limited space that I have in there. That screen goes from wall to wall of the tent and it's just too awkward a position for me to get in to in order to accurately identify and chop potential "wasted" bud sites.

And to think....there was a time where I thought that I made the screen TOO tall. Not even close Butters.

This has made me question the screen idea altogether over just fim'ing or topping a coulpe of times. With no screen present, it would be no problem to keep all my flowering growth in that 15" depth range. The screen actually back-fired on me in this sense. :dunce:

Butters Butters Butters, good to have yah back brother. Extremely sorry that you got sick, everyone I know is Cali is experiencing some sort of Flu. Anyhow I am kind of pissed at you for not helping save the whales n shit. ♠

Anyhow from what you are describing you could do multiple harvests, it could actually end up being a good thing.

I have been doing research on getting multiple harvests, and it seems that if done right with experience you should be able to pull off close to 50-100% more from a double or a triple harvest compared to just one harvest.

I am still a noob and haven't experimented with this but I might just give it a shot to see how it goes.

Also another thing you could do is still raise the light to where the taller colas are happy and not stressing, and then add a few very cheap CFL's to the lower colas.
Yeah Bender. I was thinking about adding some cfl lighting for those. I just made my tent all shitty so there's really nothing to hang them from. I've got those GIANT ones from HD too. I need to make some adjustments to my tent. I also have a spare 150wHPS that I could throw in there but again...nothing to hang it from. Note to self, spend more time planning grow tent next time.

I think I'm gonna have to do a phased harvest like you mentioned. Gotta do some serious research on technique 1st so I don't go screwing stuff up. We'll see how this turns out.

By the way.....F'ing INCREDIBLE JOB LOLLIPOPPING YOUR PLANTS BOSS!!!
Absolutely picture perfect Bro. Was gonna mention on your thread and then I saw like 5 people beat me to the punch and figured you got the point ;-)

For anyone reading this journal that wants to see the aggressive lollipopping maintenance that I should've been doing (as I mentioned very recently), check Bender's journal out. It's magazine worthy.

Hey Butters, sorry to hear about your flu. Glad your good lady could take care of things for you while you were down though.

Thanks Snow. Even though they're fallin over, I'm still wishing they were fatter still.

You're getting mighty close I see my friend. :weed:. Isn't that last coupla a weeks the absolute worst? Hate that wait. And then, you chop, dry for a couple...and STILL need to wait for the cure. I never make it through a full cure before I hack in there and puff away. Hope your patience is better than mine. :bigjoint:

Okay, Cliffnote:
Blah blah blah, they're not filling out the way I hoped.
Blah blah blah, I used this Gravity stuff which is supposed to make my buds denser (not so much bigger) and now my tall colas are flopping over the place liked beach dolphins or whales (..."F*** you dolphin and f*** you whale!")
Blah blah blah, despite clearly knowing that I needed to cut WAY back on nutes while using gravity and need raise lights WAY up with it's use....I didn't do either enough and now I have some burn to deal with.
Blah blah blah, I get the flus and get the same advice from my doctor that I'm getting from Brian Williams on f'ing NBC Nightly News...only he doesn't charge me a copay. :bigjoint:
Blah blah blah, my canopy is all kinds of uneven and now have giant colas that look like they have a month left and little colas that look like they have a week left:wall:
Blah blah blah, screens are annoying obstacles that, when in combination with my laziness, result in really weird looking, inefficient grows.

There...all caught up again.

Bender's canopy is text book aint it!? Looking forward to seeing that one play out.

The last couple of weeks is soooo hard, you know it mate! My SSH still have like 4 weeks to go as well! F*CK!!!!

Cure? What's that then? LOL.....no mate, my first/early buds never get cured. I smoke them as soon as they're dry. But then the later mature buds will get a nice slow dry and long cure. By x-mas, I will have some primo cured bud to smoke. Happy Days!

Thank you so much Butters, I am totally thrilled with my results, I did a lot of research on internet, through books and of course friends, but I can say this in all honesty, forums is where I learned the most, I wouldn't have been able to get this far. Still I have a long ways to go.

Good job on catching us up on the grow. I think you are getting over frustrated, you are still gonna end up with great bud bro.

I have been reading on multiple harvest a lot and to be honest you can make it as complicated as you want but once again KISS (keep it simple stoner) method would be fine. Cut of the top colas that have matured. leave the little popcorn buds in the bottom that aren't mature, and continue flowering.

Some strains seem to do really well with this. Although I wouldn't plan on doing thing indoor every time since it might not be space/time efficient but for outdoors or in situation like yours this could be great.

Hey All!

Well, I sure am sorry I haven't been taking too good care of my journal. The laptop issue that I had got a lot worse and now it's completely unusable until I scrounge up the money to get it fixed.

But the good news is, the BV grow has finished. Just last Wednesday in fact. I ran to some heat issues in the final few weeks of the grow. Pretty sure it was the Gravity that set this off but I need better circulation in there on that canopy. :fire:

The heat issue created a huge variance in the quality of the smoke. Those closest to the light tend to be on the weaker side. But the lower buds pack a great punch.

I spent the whole weekend manicuring and drying. Ugh. I am so doing a better job with the lollipopping of the scrog next time around. Took forever. :wall:

But when all was said and done, it came in at just a little over 5 ounces total. That's pretty much the number I was shooting for so I'm happy...particularly considering that this op was far from dialed in.

The White Rhino that I started is currently 6 weeks into veg under the screen. I'll be taking a bunch of clones tomorrow and then putting her into flower. She's already a beast.

Well, that's it for now. I'm pretty much crippled in regards to my journal without my laptop so you won't be seeing me too much until that gets fixed. I'll stop in and update as I get access to other computers. Thanks for checkin in.

Five ounces from one plant, indoors, that wasn't vegged for a year to become a gigantic tree first?! OK, that is it!!! I've gotta go SCROG, and ASAP! I could flower two or three plants at a time tops, instead of aiming for my county's limit of six mature in order to ensure I have enough to cook with it daily, etc.! My best friend keeps telling me he'll help with whatever I need (in and out of my garden), so I'm gonna take him up on it and have him help me build some good screens (meaning I'll be doing the bulk of the designing and he'll be doing all of the building LOL).

Sorry about the computer issues... I know how much that sucks! I've been wondering where you'd been, but I've been so reclusive lately that I figured I just kept missing you or something. ;)

Tried to rep you, but apparently I've gotta spread that around more first. RIU's "fair" repping procedure annoys me, because I have to give rep for things I don't care all that much about in order to give it for things I do. Oh well, the thought is there, eh?

Hey All,

Well, I have a few minutes with access to a computer so I figured that I'd give a rather important update. My math on the 5 ounces was WAY off. Had the wrong conversion factor on the whole grams to ounces thing.

It wasn't 5 ounces....it was a little over 7 ounces for that one plant. I was really impressed when I recrunched the numbers and figured out that I got 7 ounces and not 5. But then I did the math again and realized that it only comes out to about 0.5 grams/watt.

So, the veg time was about 6 weeks and the flowering time went into 11 weeks. That's quite a wait for one plant.

In the meantime, I have the White Rhino now just 1 day away from flowering and I just germed a Pineapple Express seed so the perpetual aspect should be down pat soon enough.

Thanks for all of the well-wishes and for stoppin in.

 Seven ounces?! Nothing to complain about there!

I wonder if the .5g per watt was due to it being just one plant... what I mean is, in the pot size and space allotted, perhaps one plant can't produce much more than that. It's not like you just grew one of MBlaze's gigantic trees. You were originally going to have two or three plants in this grow, weren't you? I'll bet two or three plants grown the exact same way you did this one would yield your 1g per watt. :bigjoint:

Ugh. Difficulties in the grow room already. Still no tent yet in that room. Taking my time in making up my mind on the specific 400hps light that I want (digital vs magnetic vs price).

Conditions are tough. Temp is at 75 which is a-ok as far as I'm concerned.

But the humidity...Ugh. That 59% you see in the 1st pic. That's only after a full day of using a 50 gallon dehumidifier on high. :wall:

Already experienced a brief mold problem in the coco before the dehumidifier made it down there. Went away the moment the top layer of the coco got dry luckily. Gotta watch out for that. Mold can and will kill me :fire:

So, the Blue Venom is about 2 weeks old (a little older). No nutes used yet but tomorrow will start that off. Switched from distilled water to tap water filtered through a britta and allowed to sit over a couple of days. No problems noticed on this yet.

The nutes I'll be starting out with Fox Farm veg nutes just to see how they react. I've got a ton of this stuff left so I figured I should try it at least. Any signs of nute issues and I switch to the Canna Coco A and B as quickly as possible.

That's it for now. Like I said, boring at 1st but the very beginning of a grow always is.

Butters:bigjoint:
Get the hinged glass bother. Glass needs cleaning once a week at least. Cool tubes are a nightmare. You have to take the light apart, duct tape and all to clean the dust inside of it. Other square lights make you take out screws and stuff.

My first hempy style bucks I used 75/25 coco/perlite. But at the bottom 3" of the bucket I filled with the (hydroton sized) perlite. That's 1" above the drain hole. I wanted to create a permanent air space between the water and coco. I was worried about the coco wicking up too much water, I want only the roots drinking without worrying about over watering.

My A haze 3's are in the 9th week of flower. I had 5 fem. All germed great. I put 1 in a 5 gallon bucket, 1 in a coco pot,(for comparison), and 3 in 2.5 gallon buckets.

Coco pot is the smallest and closest to finish. Each of the hempy's will give me 1/4-1/2 pound each. coco bout 2 onces. :(

The 5 gallon is biggest, but turns out to be another strain I think. smells like vanilla. Got the 5 in a pack of fem from greenhouse seeds. Anyone know what GH strain smells like vanilla?

Also I got 5 femmed alaskan ice before and got 4 Alaskan ice and one Super Lemon Haze. I didn't complain because they were both unbelievable.

Everyone whom smoked the Alaskan ice said it was the best they ever had. Then the SLH got finished and all those people then said THAT was better than the ice. lol But if you folks think Alaskan Ice is ordinary, think again. I would smoke the ice if it didn't get me high. I loved the flavor so much. A truley exotic smoke. But SLH won the cup 2 years now. And is just as special.
