here is what happening . the butane get sucked into a house or garage. and all it takes is a small fan running. the motor in a fan is magnetic . if you took it apart you will notice a small blue glow . and yes will ignite the butane ! even a fridge freezer will light the gas. this butane is noting to be messed with unless you very far away from buildings . there has been cases I know of in Michigan . people that swear they know there pros blew the entire house up ! from making oil . using 5x butane cans . please take it out side and at least 500 feet away from all building when pumping the gas through the tubes and trim

Flammable gas has a upper and lower explosive limit. If it was over its upper limit opening the window might have taken it back down below and caused it to go off. And yes it needed a source. Bad stuff Denris

This is the correct answer. It really takes very little spark when it's in that zone though.

Why would make bho indoors to begin with?
Unless you have a properly vented fume hood it's just asking to blow your house up.

There are 3 components to fire. Heat, fuel and oxygen. You must have all 3 to have an explosion/fire. Remove any one of the three and no fire. Introduce any missing component to the other two and you will have fire. Simply opening a window (adding oxygen) to a room full of butane (fuel) will not start a fire without a heat source (electric motor/open flame).

I seriously doubt anyone was in a room with butane above the UEL. The window probably created a spark when opened, or the person caused one with static electricity. Or it was simply coincidence that some other source ignited the room after the window was open.

And to answer the ops original question: No. That is why lighters create sparks. Without them you are just releasing butane into the air and it does not explode or ignite.

The uel for butane is 8.4 % not to high . As a aside two dummy's a block from here used the stove to make oil with alcohol and blew the place up. Both are in the burn unit and lost 30 thou. {cop prices] in product, outside is the best bet. Denris
