can i hook a 400/600w ballast/bulb to a 1000w hood/fixture?

i have this small hood i've used with a 1000w sunsystem but got a bigger hood to use with that same ballast so now i have the small hood left - can i just get a 400 or 600 ballast/bulb and just plug it in?

or what else could use it for without spending much?

why?he can use the hood with any size ballast and bulb if the bulb fits.and you could even run a 600watt bullb on a 1000 watt ballast.

The hood doesn't matter . The ballast is what matters. Go ahead and use it.

its just a socket and a cable you are talking about rite?

right. its kinda what i figured....i mean a hood is a hood but i was wondering if the socket itself can be used for other wattage bulbs. it makes sense, as long as its 1000w or less, why not?

with the hood , you just need to make sure if it operates HPS or MH bulbs

my hood , as most new ones, will operate both.

Can I run my new 1000w ballast and bulb to my ol' 600 w HOOD.??? At 100%??? its a tube w/ a nice big hood/reflectr.
the new 1000 w "hood" is a thin piece of shaped metal .

You will be fine. all tubes are the same as they come in 6" or 8" sizes. Just make sure if you are going to use a Metal Halide to get the right shape bulb as they mostly tend to have that bulge and will not work in tubes (hoods only). If you are looking for MH that will fit, try the USHIO Gro LUX MH bulb which are similar to the shape of a HPS bulb.

I've got a 600w HPS bulb & 600w digi ballast running to a simple fixture that came with a 1000w set up.
And my 1000w HPS bulb, & ballast running to my tube/hood.

I know this is a old thread but I have a 1000w sun system yield master 2 supreme hood and switchable ballast I was wondering if I could hook up a different 600w bulb and different 600w ballast instead of the sun system ballast?the new ballast would be able to run both mh/hps just by switching bulb the older ballast I had to switch on the ballast aswell as the bulb would this interfere with the how the newer ballast

If your asking about using the hood with a 600 watt ballast and 600 watt bulb in a hood you previously ran with 1000 watt bulb and ballast that's fine. If your trying to run a 600 watt bulb on a 1000 watt ballast then no you can't. Hoods can be hooked up to pretty much any ballast you might have to get a adapter to plug hood into ballast though.

Yes I want to run a 600 w bulb and ballast instead of the 1k. The thing is the 1k ballast I had to flip a switch on the ballast between hps and mh will this affect anything? The cords al match and connect I just haven’t plugged it in yet

Nope the hood dont matter. What's important is making sure the bulb matches the ballast.
