Can I vent into ceiling? please help

Hey guys Im still having little bit of a heat issue since theres no where to really put the hot air other than into the room my closet is in. So i thought maybe i could get the room to drop a few degrees if i vent my cooltube into the ceiling. I am planning on cutting a 4" hole for duct work and vent it up just passing the sheetrock. What do you guys think and how do you find studs in the ceiling if you have that shitty popcorn ceiling. And will my plants survive in temp ranging from 87-92?
thanks

That is really hot my friend! Could you pump the heat up in the loft?
looking for studs in walls/ceilings, get a hammer and hit the wall lightly and listen to differant sounds, meaning one being deeper and so on!
you will hear the differance when you 'TAP' it!

there really isnt anywhere for the air to go once its in the ceiling unless its the attic above your closet. if this is the case then vent away, but if theres a floor above your ceiling then it wont work well at all.

aye, what IS above you.

if you find a stud (i sometimes use a finishing nail and woodpecker the shit out of it, series of holes ina straight line till one wont go/ or a metal detector to find the screws/ or a small strong magnet) then they are usually on 16 18 20 or 22 inch centers, 16 and 18 being more common.

if you just blow into the ceiling (and its someone elses floor) it just preassurizes the cavity, causing back-preassure (like venting into a long box), which can burn your ventfan out by applying way to much consistant load against the thrust bearings

if you know how the joist are hung (those are the long supports between floors, that can sometimes run full length through the whole building, and sometime they meet at a central support beam)

anyway follow the direction of your joists, see if there's another room you control on a straight line path with your vent hole, and make another hole there for the air to escape (you could disguise it as a ceiling mounted speaker, or nonfunctional can-light)

but that only works as far as your joists run. if they meet at a central beam then you can only go that far

i know its hot they were in ther elast night the hottest it got was 92 and they look ok but its only been one day so idk
Im on the first floor so there is just the space between my ceiling and the upstairs floor so i guess this wont work then it seems

I need to somehow just tweak everything to get it down to a high of 89 is what im aiming for right now

I have it going filter>fan>cooltube>ducting out of closet
I have a regular fan for intake as well as intake holes
will getting a 4"duct fan to exhause out the top help
I have plenty of ventilation even when its 90 in the tent it doesn't feel that hot

any tips or tricks that help drop temps by little amounts?

Thanks everybody

I was hoping that in my ceiling venting into the "long box" hoping it would have cracks and spaces for the air to leak into other areas. i dont want to break my inline fan though

what is the temp of the room your tent is in.

sounds like youve got a circular airflow problem.
those cool tubes are ment to suck cool air in and blow it somewhere else to keep room temps low.
by just venting into the closet youve essentially made the cooltube almost useless

air coming in at the bottom is still too warm from being exhuasted.

is their a way you could drop the room temp??
window airconditioner??
adjust AC vents??
remove anything in room making additional heat, (this includes computers).
non movable heat generators, ie hot water heaters, steam pipes, should be covered in insulating blankets anyway, so cover those.
where is your ballast located??? inside tent or outside?? ballast creates alot of heat by itself, if its not on a cord already, make it so, and move that bitch outa the tent
keep all other lights off.
keep all air intakes as close to ground as possible. 6" or so.
all exhaust should be close to ceiling 10-12" .depending on the exhuast temp, you can get closer.
what is the size of your filter in relation to your ducting?? (filter slows airflow, if you enlarged your filter area you could squeeze a few more cfm out)

ok so heres something you could do, cut about 1/2-3/4 of an inch off the top and bottom of the door.
make sure theres no light leaking, and just adjust you venting.

and if worse comes to worse, cut the hole in the cieling larger than 4 inches say maybe 6 inches, or 2 4 inch holes (enough room to use a tape measure, fyi make a tiny hole first, the size of your finger to feel around, if theres insulation just go ahead and stop, dont make the hole any bigger)
if its free of insulation measure down between the joists, in both directions. add the measurements up and go buy that much ducting plus 5-12' depending on how much u have already
shove one duct as far in one direction as you can, shove the other in the other direction as far as it will go.

use one as intake, one as exhaust, its the same circular air problem, but the increased distance between the 2 coupled with traveling the distance between joists should provide enough thermal load to cool the air a bit.

or...... you could try magic.

I have a fairly large/odd shaped closet with a home made tent made out of panda film staples and duct tape everything is pretty air tight and light proof except for the entrance. I am venting out of the tent into the room the closet is in with like 5' of ducting. The room outside the closet is about 79-81. I dont think im going to cut a hole in my ceiling. I may purchase a 5000 btu ac for 100$ from hdepot
My room is slightly larger than what is recommended for such a small ac but do you think it will be enough. If I can get the room down to 74 im hoping ill have a high temp of maybe 83 in the tent which sounds good to me right now. Do you think this is an accurate estimate and do you think this a/c will do the job
room dimensions are approximately 20' x 20' then a 18' x 3 ' hallway. the ac will be in the window at the end of the hallway maybe 5 feet away from intake fro tent

Thanks for the help everyone

I have always vented into the ceiling or straight into the wall with no problems, there not sealed up air tight, when i make a hole the air coming out of the wall is hot like the outside temp not like my house temp, so i dont and havent seen a problem with doing it.
