can someone find out where you are by you posting pictures?

no, your address isn't embedded into the pictures, but certain info is, like type of camera, focal length, blah blah blah... this is called exif data, check out what all in included on it..
now if you're using a cell phone to host pix and don't turn off your geo tracking, then yes, your location will also be included in the exif data..

use a free program like microsoft paint to delete all exif data before posting pix.. :D

The ipad mini uses location so it does show where the photo was taken, within I think 15 yards of exact location. Beware of newer apple devices.

If they are using a site to track down growers, most of us would probably already be in trouble.
It isn't hard to track down where an IP is coming from even people who use proxy's arent as protected as they might think.
I see it about like ordering seeds. They arent going to spend time chasing down people order 20 seeds. If you are posting pics/grows that are clearly well beyond any legal limits, you might find yourself at the center of an investigation. In that case, you probably wouldnt have any idea it started with a website. There would be 100 different reasons how someone growing over legal limits could get caught.

Pictures taken with a smartphone while the GPS function is enabled are traceable to or near the location taken. If you want to use a cellphone then disable the GPS and use a exif file program as mentioned to be extra safe.

Thank you OP, as I was just discussing this with someone the other day. Also, thank you for the answers everybody. I agree, if they were using the site to bust people, there'd be a lot more people screwed by now, but you never can be TOO careful.

Yea, if your device has GPS location it can embed your location in the image. My phone allows me to turn on or off gps tagging in my camera settings. If I turn it on, it warns me that it's on. If I take a picture with it on and share it via email or fb or whatever, it warns me that my location is embedded.

Your location is stored as exif data. To see if your image has your location embedded, just google exif viewer. To remove the data you can google exif remover online. Additionally, there are exif viewer/remover plug-ins available for most web browsers. Add-ons for web browsers are generally super easy to install, you just have to poke around your browser a bit if you have never done it before. Or you can download and install programs on your computer that will handle it, probably apps for smart phones and ipads and you name it. If you have photoshop or lightroom, that can remove all of your exif data.

Be careful of using online exif remover services. One site has a big red disclaimer saying stop uploading pictures of illegal shit. Never know if the site owners will see pictures of your grow and have your gps info stored in their database... they might try to be a fuckin law enforcement hero.

If you use an iPhone there is an app on the AppStore called "exif remover"

I run it on all my pictures as I don't break out the laptop very much anymore. Just do everything from my phone.

In Windows you can right click on an image file, and choose properties, and if you go under the Details tab it will list all embedded metadata. Furthermore, you can remove all that data simply by clicking "Remove Properties and Personal Information" at the bottom of that tab.

You don't need to download any additional software (though, as mentioned, MS Paint will do the job).

In general I'd suggest never using online services since they can easily just save your original image with the GPS location in it. Best to always do these things on a PC/Mac in your house and under your full control.

Hell, I don't even leave the pics on my phone in case my phone gets stolen!

new season in 2 weeks or so?! I am getting pumped. Read about the 2014 regs? Turbos are coming back, 1.6L engines, fuel usage cut drastically, KERS is gonna be more powerful, same lap times.... It's going to be fucking nuts. Like the Senna era back again!

yeah, i'm still on the fence about bringing turbos back tbh.. my first grand prix was montreal in 03 when they were still using the v10s, and the biggest surprise of the weekend was how amazing the cars sounded.. when ever a driver would lift off the throttle, there would be a huge sound that almost sounded like it was breaking the sound barrier, lol..
my next race they moved on to the v8s, and as good as they sound, i still miss the 10s.. i'm not much of a fan of kers to begin with, and can't wait till they get rid of that damn artificial drs.. i could go on and on, lol.. :D
