can we talk about pumpkins?

I don't know if this is a weed site or a gardening in general site. I do grow weed and have used this site for that. However, I'm trying to grow some pumkins, for the first time, and wondering if anyone has any info/tips.

Here's what's going on: I planted 3 seeds of 'big max' in coco plugs. One of them really took off. I took that plant and planted it in a 5 gallon pot of a 65/35 coco/hydroton (threw the others away). Its growing in natural sunlight on my deck. I use the general hydroponics flora nova line of products. Currently I'm giving it 'grow' and some additional calcium (because of coco's reputation). Its looking great, but its early. It has its two primitive leaves, one large leaf a little smaller than my hand, and a little bud of a new leaf.

I understand the concept, while growing marijuana, of grow nutrients and bloom nutes... of light cycles. You start off with grow... then switch to 12/12... and follow with bloom. Does it work the same with pumpkins (sans the 12/12)? Do I use grow nutes untill flowers.. Then only flower nutes (just like mj)? Or do the pumpkins need grow nutes, as well, while flowering and producing fruit? The seed packet says to grow these in mounds of dirt on the ground. Will they grow well in pots hydroponically?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Pumpkins require heavy amounts of nutrients, there is no need to switch between a grow/flower nute. The flower is simply for fertilization of the ovary (the bump behind the flower), it needs only a small amount of po4 to do that; whereas mj requires a heavy amount of po4 because you want massively large, unfertilized flowers. You should feed with a standard miracle grow or other cheap, general garden fertilizer that can be dissolved in h2o (shoot for 10-10-10). I imagine that they aren't going to yield that great though....some things to consider....pumpkins take on average over 100 days for maturation, they require large amounts of fertilizer, more so than almost any other crop....they also vine out for 20-30 feet usually...

if I get a couple pumkins I will be thrilled. Thanks for the info. Big max takes 120 days from start to finish... so the packet says. Which means my pumkins should be done around the beginning of october. Tomorrow I'll go look for a 10 10 10 fert and go from there. Thanks again.
