Carbon filter Vs. ozone generator

I didnt say they didnt work did I? I said they are not very effective for an average grow room.

I would bet they work great after parties and shit, if you got ttime to leave it running without worrying about it.

Only place I would use an Ozone Generator would be in room that everything was being exhausted to before going outside. Never in a grow room or a room with any plants or animals, or humans.

Nah, you stated that "They are about as effective as a plug in glade air freshener." which is a pretty fallacious statement.

Its called an analogy...

Ever put a plug in glade air freshener in your grow room? Watch your plants die just like an Ozone generator.

I have two glade plugins in my office outside of the grow closet.

No dead plants yet. :)
I think the key word is 'outside'. I wouldnt recommend doing this, but if you put the plug in glade freshener in the closet with the plants, it will affect them.

If you ran an ozone generator outside the grow closet and just in the room the plants would be fine too. Its direct exposure that affects them the most.

If you're going to use an ozone generator put it in an air tight enclosure (a box, vent pipe, ect) away from your plants and human contact. Run your exhaust vent to that enclosure where that air will be treated with o3 and piped out the other side to the outdoors. That way you and your plants aren't exposed it or it's harmful effects. That air when it reaches outside will be defused with the normal normal oxygen outside. I plan on using both a carbon filter and an ozone generator in my setup.

Exactly. Thats the only way I would ever use one.

But if you just run a passive carbon filter recirculating air into the grow room then your exhaust filter wont have to work so hard and you will never have any odor problems.

Ozone generators will kill anything organic at all. The people saying they are O3 are correct. But its unstable, You cant just go attaching molecules here and there. That extra oxygen molecule really wants to detach itself.

People in the know will know chlorine and bleach are both great ways to kill plants and living matter right? They are both primarily oxidizing agents. Thats what ozone does. When an ozone molecule lands on an organic compound it releases the extra oxygen molecule turning whatever it lands on basically into bleach. The inside of your lungs when you take a lungful of ozone? May as well inhaled a light concentration of bleach. This is why you get that feeling when you inhale it. Small amounts wont kill you, and the long term effects are unknown and ASSUMED to be nothing to worry about. large copy machines release ozone...you might recognize the smell. Thats why you feel a little sick if you stay in the copy room too long.

So if you put the ozone generator in the grow room the smell will be killed, but your plant is actually absorbing the ozone and being oxodised from the inside out.

The best way to do it with ozone is as others said, vent from your room to a vessel containing ozone, then outside. Or if you have central ducting find the RIGHT amount of ozone to pump through the ducting..the right amount of ozone will leave no smell. There will be the same amount of ozone in the air as scent and will cancel each other out.

Carbon filters are just easier, and getting a fan controller and cutting 5- 10% of your fans rpm will reduce the noise a LOT and still move enough air. or use insulated ducting and read some of the threads detailing how to hang your fan inside a box to cut the noise.

For those who will say im wrong just tell me what you dont agree with, I can provide evience on any point i have made.

hey easy... are you hooking your scrubber up to a can-fan? I would leave that puppy running and make an excuse... "The GF is drying her hair".
Thx
Usually if someone hears a noise of a fan they will be suspisous. I know I got a exhaust fan hanging outside of my grow room I need to make it look normal, or cover the entire wall. Any suggestions? Click on my avatar to see my pics.

I use a fabreeze carbon filter that runs 24/7, I use a germgardian with an ionizer and have a carbon filter that vents outside. Check my avatar for my grow pics. I also planted lavendar and rosemary outside.

Freakin' Dead On.

Hey KaliKitSune... I've read a bunch of advice on this board, but honestly I didn't even think of this one...

It was about the time I switched to a new grow environment when I started using that AirWick spray contrapment that you can set to 9/18/36 minutes... well, they started not to drink a lot for about a month.

My 6 plants encompassing 3 reservoirs (4 in 1 though), used to drink a total of 3 gallons of the 15 gallon nute mixture every 2 days.

When I moved them to the new grow environment I immediately had to implement some sort of smell reducer. So, I opted for the AirWick things and some liquid stuff you put in cups to reduce the smell. They slowed down their drinking tremendously drinking about 3 gallons a week. Buds were growing slowly over the course of about a month.

I bought a ppm meter finally, and had it all calibrated nice but still no dice.

So, I then threw an OZONE generator in there and fried the leaves, about 40% or less so not too bad, but still it got 1 whole plant, but it's still going.

In any case, back to my point...

It was at that time about 4 or 5 days ago when I took every bit of air freshener out completely...

They drank 3 gallons the first 3 days, and I just checked tonight, and they've drank about 1.5 gallons since yesterday.

Thanks a million BCtrippin, I would have never realized it until I read your words.

Airwick uses loads of chemicals that will clog stoma and stomata, stopping transpiration. I use Glade plugins with my own homemade all natural oil extracts instead of their scented cartridges.

I see an average of an inch and a half of growth every 12-14 hours on my Mr. Stripey tomato. My sweet basil is doing just fine, no issues either. I do have ONE glade plugin with my oils in the actual closet, hooked right to the power strip. My plants drop my reservoir level an inch daily.

Don't use chemical scents, use all-natural extracts of oils like catnip, or rosemary, or lavendar, or basil (one of the primary reasons I'm growing basil in the closet.)

No problem.

Glad to hear you found the problem. Keep those little plant killers Outside the grow room, in the hallway or something, but never inside the grow room.

So many people overlook something so simple. I dunno what exactly it is, but most of those air fresheners use oil based fragrances, Im guessing they clog up the plants stomata and make it harder for them to breathe resulting in stunted growth and eventually death.

I'm about to start my first grow on two 4x4 flood tables under three 600w HPS. My room is 10x12x8 and after visiting the Can website found I would need a 6" HO fan paired with a Can 66 filter. The hydro shop didn't have a 6" fan so he gave me a 8" HO and Can 75 for the same price. IT IS LOUD AS SHIT, LOL. But after talking to a few ppl on these forums, I've been told by several that all I need do is get a Router Speed Control from HarborFreight for $20 and set the fan to a speed (and volume) that I'm comfortable with. With all the good things I've heard about Can filters, I'm confidant that even at reduced speed nobody will smell anything. Especially since its so much larger than what I need. One thing to keep in mind about these filters, though. At high humidity I'm told they're less efficient, and at 80% relative humidity they stop working altogether.

I don't want to sound dumb but my friend said her husband just used a hepa filter to clean the air. My grow room is getting stinky and I'm looking for direction.

Hepa is good for intake. Keeps dust out of the air. But for filtering odor, your going to want to invest in a fan and carbon filter.

Seriously, dont mess around with gimmicks and crap, just go spend $2-300 the first time and get a 4" vortex style fan, and order a carbon filter, 4" flange, with at least 11lbs of carbon. You will have a 100% odorless grow and never have to worry. If the fan is too loud get a fan controller and run it at a lower speed.

bghydro.com has cheap filters and fans.

$87 for a filter and you will have 100% odorless grow...Trust me...

ya a filter for the odor is an absolute must...your security depends on it....if you get busted, they don't let you bring your buds to jail with you
