Good point man, I bought a "30x" jewelers loupe and it is no where near 30x. I have a 5x from some kit and the "30x" is slightly more powerful then the 5x. Where can I get a good cheap handheld microscope type deal with 30-45x magnification so i can see them more close and clear? When I use the ones I have I can see the trichs and there shape and everything but I really gotta be able to see them closer to tell if its ready or not. I know there not ready right now, shes not even at 2 months flowering yet.

if you have good eye sight you can see when the trichs turn amber looks like black specs on the sugar leaves last 1-2 weeks
and see when there cloudy, looks like icing sugar sprinkled on the buds/sugar leaves, can have this for weeks (round week 2-4 onwards)
when they are clear you can't see them



you should be able to see with x5 mag

the first thing to look for is the hairs turning from white to brown or different color but this could also happen if the rooms to hot for a few days and more white hairs will grow when the temp reduces

if you chop early, you can end up with a low quality bud and lower yeild

Yeah, you shouldn't rely on any one sign too much. If it is still putting out new white hairs, it's probably not done yet, even if some of the trichs are turning. By the same token, it's also probably not done if all the hairs have turned brown but the trichs haven't turned. Another good sign is the yellowing of the lower fan leaves, though that can easily be confused with nutrient/pH problems, so it definitely isn't a reliable factor on its own.

It's hard to recognize the signs your first time, but after awhile you'll get the hang of it and just have an intuitive sense of how close the plant is to finishing based on all those factors, though obviously plants vary from strain to strain. Just as an example of what finished bud can look like, here's a plant I grew back in 2003, which shows the browning of all the hairs and the yellowing of the leaves:



As far as a microscope, I just have a camera with a zoom lens, so I take macro shots to see what the trichs look like. But if I didn't have that, I wouldn't spend too much money on a microscope. You can kinda tell the color of the trichs just with your eyes or a cheap magnifying glass, assuming your vision isn't terrible.

Hey everyone! its been a while and i just wanted to check in with everyone to see how there all doing. im still flowering and ive had a few problems. unfortunatly i have no new pics so just bare with me here lol. well i believe my girl was root bound so i transplanted it into a 1 gallon bucket. but before i did and i believed it to be rootbound. all of my leaves were dying. every single one was yellow an crispy, the buds felt dry to a touch an as i slightly pinched one of the tops of the buds it made crackly sounds as if it was dry as fuck so i chopped one of my branches an hung it over night, then cut off a tiny nug in the morning off the branch an steam dryed it in the microwave. i got a slight buzz from it but ofcourse it tasted like clorophil an didnt really have a mary J odor to it. well my main question is.. i still cannot tell if my plant is done yet. the 30x jewelers loupe i got for 2 bucks is not really 30x its just like my 5x and i do not have good eyesight. its very difficult to hold the magnification device still zooming in that close to the trichromes. some of the hairs are starting to turn brownish red. but in other spots new white hairs are popping up left and right. after i transplanted.. no growth for bout 5 days as it barely clung to life (in my opinion) some leaves started to get there color back an it exploded with growth. there getting fatter an more white hairs. but at the same time, some hairs are still turning brownish red. ive done one flush so far and it was a gallon of distilled water, no nutes. the 28th of june was 2 months into flowering. im basically confused still on how long it will flower for? and how can i really tell when my trichromes are bout 60% cloudy, 40% amber? is there any other tell tail signs besides hairs changing colors and trichomes changing colors? sorry i typed this out really fast and ive realized its very unorganized and all over the place. lol thats why i said bare with me here. well thanks in advanced to the ones that really can help me out with the advice i need. btw i dont have a camera any more due to finacial struggles, had to sell it. my phone has a shit camera an i have no way to take a pic of the trichs for you guys an gals out there. thanks again everyone! stay high my friends

Well now, that's not very nice of you! It's very hard to help unless you have pictures to share, since you said you can't really look at the trichomes. These are the things that happen to a plant when it reaches the end of flowering, other than the trichomes changing:

(1) Virtually all the hairs turn brown/red.
(2) The fan leaves sticking out of the buds start to turn "fall colors" (yellow/orange/purplish).
(3) The actual flowers start to look "plump" and the bud leaves (small ones) kinda start to curl up against the flowers.

Those are the main things to look for, other than trichomes. As long as the plant is still putting out new white hairs, the buds will continue to get larger, and you could always wait longer. Some people feel otherwise, but that's my 2 cents.

thanks man! youve helped me alot! but ive already cut it down an its dryed an curing now, my larger colas took longer to dry while my popcorn buds cured and it tasted real sweet an not so much skunky, got pretty high after quitting for a month or so then smoked and wow i got blown lol. thanks again man! youre awesome, hopefully i can grow again soon but my parents are on lookout since they found this last grow an let me keep it til it was finished, my dad used to grow back in the day so he understand the patience you need for this shit to be done properly, even though i fucked it up a little bit lol thanks again man, btw your grow is sick as fuck, wish i coulda done something like that. but space was a huge issue for me. good luck to ya bro!
