Changing Bulbs

I was wondering if anybody had any suggestions on how long a HPS bulb should be used for until it gets swapped out for a new bulb. The bulb still looks bright but obviously the light intensity reduces over time. I was also wondering if anybody had an opinion on 50,000 lumen bulbs compared to 55,000 lumen bulbs in regards to whether or not it makes a large difference in overall plant growth. Thank-you

Mr. Skunk....

If possible it is good to change your bulb at least once a year ( or every 4 harvests) some bulb companies claim that their bulbs last for several years...

It is more important to change the HPS bulbs in the flowering room then the bulbs in the veg room...

this being said.. there are many growers that never change their bulbs..

It is also important to clean your bulbs (with rubbing alcohol) regularly,,,, of course, you do this when the lights are off..

Thanks for the advice. Do you have any opinion on bulbs with higher lumen's? Do you think It would be worth it to pay more money for these bulbs? Oh and by the way I love you too.

the more lummes the better, i use phillips son-t-agor bulbs and my hydo guy say the more wattage the longer the bulb lasts 3 to 4 grows at 400 w 4 to 5 at 600w but i have noticed by the last grows on these bulbs the budz become less dense .

It depends on what type of lamp you're using.
These recommendations are based on 18 hours of daily use.

Type When to replace

1000w (mh) lamps 12 months
1000w (mh) lamps "agro sun & warm deluxe 15 months
1000w (mh) lamps u cool deluxe 6500k 12 months
400w (mh) lamps 18 months
400w (mh) lamps u cool deluxe 6500k 15 months
250w (mh) lamps u cool deluxe 5400k 12 months
175w (mh) lamps daylight bulb 5500k 15 months
All regular 75w to 250w (mh) lamps 15 months

Replace all hps after 24 months, with the exception of the son agro and super agro, replace after 15 months. Fluorescents should be replaced every 15 months. After 12 months, check the tubes if running more than one tube on a single ballast. Always replace all fluorescent tubes at the same time. Remember to always write down the day that you start using a new HID lamp. This will allow you to calculate when to replace it for best results.

I've done quite a bit of testing with HPS bulbs and without a doubt, changing them after every harvest is the best. Manufacturers say about every year, but yields go down after using the bulb for a single harvest.
That goes for soil as well. New bulbs and soil every harvest for maximum yield.
