Channel 4 is planning a ground-breaking new four-part series that will see people taking illegal drugs live on TV in order to explore the effects of such substances on the human body.
The programme, called Drugs Live, will take the form of a four-part science series in which all the experiments will take place in a supervised environment, in the hope that some useful data will be gathered about the harmful effects of drugs like cocaine.
Channel 4's chief creative officer Jay Hunt announced the potentially controversial programme as part of several new C4 programmes that will take real risks to increase viewing figures.
As she introduced the Drugs Live series, Hunt said: The Government's drugs tsar Professor (David) Nutt was sacked for claiming that LSD and ecstasy were less harmful than alcohol.
In an incredibly bold experiment we are going to be putting that to the test live, looking at the impact all of those substances have on the human body in a clinical environment.
Referring to drugs laws as an incredibly important area of social policy, Hunt predicted that Channel 4 would be on the front foot to provide some interesting and useful data when it launches the new programme later this year.
