Cheap and Cheerful DIY using Citizen cobs

Well now I'm a bit confused. This is the first I've heard of the ultra/ultra vs..... After a bit of poking around, I see these appear to be in reference to the iceLED line. I'm wanting to go passive so I was looking at the 9980 line not the iceLED ones. I didn't notice before but I see in John MacDonald there in the last page mentioned using the non-Xtra ones in his build, unless he just left the Xtra part of of his description on the reply.

Looking at the datasheet info, is "Dissipated Power Pd" how much watt-heat it can dissapate (48.9 W)? The COBS will be running high 30s with the 1050mA I'm pushing thru them. Please let me know if I'm interpreting the data wrong?

4x CLU048-1212C4-303M2K1 (34.6v)
4x Ideal holder 50-2204CT for CLU048
4x pre-drilled heatsink 120*H70mm

Cost $133.00 excluding shipping

Are there better option within this price bracket?

same heatsinks iceled just have fans

on a bare chip basis 2 1212s are brighter than a single 1818 for the same price

but then you factor in cost of heatsinks, holders, reflectors, etc and the larger chips def have a place

@CobKits I'm rocking 12 cxb3590 with 3 hlg185h-c1400b, so 50w each on about 1.5 m2. When this run is finished I'm interested in getting a 4x8 tent and run my cxbs in one half and something else in the other half. I like to keep things symmetrical so I'm looking for 12 cobs to start. Now I'm considering the cxm22, the 1212 and the 1818 for budget/efficiency. @50ish w, with passive pin fin heatsinks, which would rock the most? I'm guessing the 1212 is the weakest.

I love the hlg185h-c1400s, maybe mostly because it fits the cxb3590 so well. I noticed that the cv drivers have a lower output than the cc's, which one would you recommend for your recommendation from ^^?

1818 is a little more efficient than a cxb
cxm22 is a little more effcient than that

CV drivers generally have higher wattage output than CC, since the drivers get filled better. a lot of that depends on which driver you select and how it matches cob voltage. the 48As match the 50V citi and luminus chips the best, you can generally get 215-225W out of them on the cob side
