cheap light fix

i was thinking of using those hid mercury vapor lights at home depot...they put out around 9000 lumens a piece...does anyone know if this will work?! im trying to do sunlight for the daylight and artificial light for the night since im doing 24 hrs str8 for the first 30-45 days...im only tryin to do this due to a fundage shortage...those lights are only 33 bucks a piece...please please please respond!:joint:bongsmilie:blsmoke:

I'd say go for it, and let us know how you do. Not terrible on the blue spectrum, and pretty low on the red. Just do it! Like Nike.

From my research(just searching mercury) i found that this isnt a great choice... not in the least. You need to figure in about double the amount of light to get any results. ie to replace a 400w system get 800 watts of mercury vapor, and your still missing out on a lot of usable light.

Why not go cfl? a pack of 8 from lowes runs about 12$ (thats 23w ea in the 6xxxk range). The fixtures are around 1.50$ each, cords about 1$ or you can make a reflector setup like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rs_QRorECvo for a few dollars extra.

CFL is proven and cheap(cheaper than all the MV lights i saw). Figure about 50$ and you can have all the lights and setup you need for vegg and flowering + hanging and reflectors +power strips etc.

I was using cfl with decent results(my problem was found to be ventilation and ph) but just got tired with half assing it, have my hps/mh in the mail now since eventually i would end up there anyway.

Not a great idea. I thought about this once too. The problem is that they give off a lot of light, but of the wrong spectrum. There is a lot of yellow produced by the bulb, but very little blue or red (needed for photosynthesis). There is a lot of "visible" light, but not "usable" light.

P6020413.jpg P6020414.jpg i pick this up at home depot for $30 its a hps color temp 2000k CRI 40 . PLAN on putting 2 more in CAB. the temp in my cab stay at 77-81 i have no fan YET.

Just plug in a few CFLs! check out the CFL section in the indoor forum to see what they can do. When its done right the results are similar to that of hps/mh at much less cost, heat, and space. It really is the best way to get the ball rolling.

In case they are new to you. a cfl is a Compact Florescent Light. Designed to replace most lamp, wall, ceiling regular bulbs(incandescant), they use much less power, are nearly cool to the touch, and put off some good useable light(make sure you buy ones marked "Daylight" or 6400k for veg and soft white or 2700k for flower, mix and match is ok) they look like this.

Here is my current grow using CFLs. In this shot i have 7 total 23watt cfls. If my Ventilation and ph(and ppm ugh) were better the plants would be much happier. After this shot i added 6 more lights on the sides. In about a week i will have my HPS/MH light and am ditching the CFLs.

Toss a 90w LED UFO over top of those (in addition to the 7 cfls) and you'll see a BIG difference! The most dank weed I've ever grown was a LED/CFL combo grow. Not the most I've ever yielded, but more than a CFL only grow and suuuuuuper dank!

I'd just rock some CFLs. There's no shame in fluorescent lights for your early grows. If you're successful, eventually you'll be able to buy some HPS from either selling to friends, or saving money by not buying your pot from now on.
