Clone Conspiracy in California??!!

I just finished growing the last of the clones i had acquired from the collectives in SFV. So Booty... My other grows (from seed)are phenomenal...
I finished mine out too and the ones I picked up from a friend are absolutely awesome, the clones from the dispensary, nothing to write home to mom about. Me and my friends are now calling it "foot" because for a period that's what it smelled like, while the other buds are sweet and smell like grapefruit.

So, I'm starting from seeds and I'll get my own shit going. Fuck the dispensary's.

I am very curious as to why purchased clones almost never produced quality, while seeds produced a far more pungent aroma even from the vegetative phase....please help.

Ironically...I purchased 3 AK-47 clones from a club...and they are straight up dank from just sitting in a clone bucket as clippings...

My bagseed shit weed...lol has no veg dank whatsoever...and that mutant is currently water curing because I know it is wretched bud...and that is from seeds.

So I dunno, I like my clones:bigjoint:

See if you know before you plant the seeds that the genetics are questionable, then you cant complain when it comes up crappy.

I purchased my seeds from attitude seed bank. So I have a level of confidence that the seeds I bought are the seeds in the package.

And all my seed ventures are awesome, i.e. https://www.rollitup.org/grow-journals/178164-mr-nice-seed-california-bean.html

Furthermore, just saying that the weed from the clones is great doesn't really mean anything because I cant tell if you know what your talking about. With all do respect one mans schwag is another mans Dank.

So when I say that the clone weed is crap, I mean there are no essential oils, after 2 weeks of curing it still smells like hay, and i would rather smoke roaches than the bud that came off those pathetic clones cuz it gives a painful high. PLUS! The club owners were so disgusted they would not even sample the pot when i brought it in to the club to find out what the deal was. Now I boycott the entire club and my half ounce a week business.

I am sure that some clubs offer quality clones, this is a given. However the intent of the thread is to discover if anyone else has been getting crappy clones from clubs so that we can impart some accountability.

clone degeneration....

very interesting!

I don't think it's clone degeneration so much as the clubs figuring most people can't grow plants anyway so they will never find out that they were crap. Mine don't smell like hay, but they definitely aren't DANK like the clones I picked up from a friend. I have had this same experience seeing what seems like the same Sativa strain around that grows well and produces buds, just not DANK.

sorry i skipped a few pages to post this. but i have seen a thread here on RIU that explains with great detail the deterioration through cloning clones.

basically what it came down to was each generation of clones not only was slightly (and i mean very slightly) different from the mother plant, but also slightly inferior from the plant before.

ill look through the forums for a minute to see if i can find the thread, you might find it an interesting read. only thing is i have not smoked yet:-?

i am familiar with what you are mentioning, though I am at a loss for words for the actual "name"....

GENETIC DRIFT

it takes a long long long long time for genetic drift to occur.... I have a plant (MTF) that is over 20 years old.... and I've only had it for almost 2, and its the same now as it was when i first brought her into the garden.

the problem with the clones being passed around is that they are not being properly selected as keepers. EXAMPLE a med patient orders 10 seeds of BLUEBERRY.. pops 5, 3 are females... takes cutting of the 3 for "sharing with the community" and the 3 that are selected by the novice are nto truly worthy of being kept...

I think it's this more than anything. It's the complete lack of controls. A patient sells clones to the dispensary, and they just turn around and sell it as what it was claimed to be.

In reality I've found that I grow out clones that I KNOW no one would select from a batch. I don't know why anyone would clone some of these...what I suspect...

Med patient buys seeds as stated above, clones all of the mothers as stated and then sells them to the dispensary because after finishing out their batch they realize the don't even want them.

I dunno what's causin' it, but I'm starting from seed and finding the strongest mother's for my next few batches. No more playin' games.

Arent there clone only varieties that have been going around for years and still exceptional quality? Infact I know there are because jason king has featured several clone only strains in his cannabibles and compiled a clone only list in the 3rd vol. He mentions that a clone only bigbud cutting went for 10k.

Yep, Some strains of grapes have been cloned for 1000's of years. It isn't the actual act of cloning that causes the problems - it is all the other hijinks mentioned in this thread.

Hello, this sounds very interesting, would you post a reference as to where you got this information?

If you are going to say its "good", please share your pictures and reasoning of why with all of us. that is why I created this thread.
Oh beyond a doubt I have gotten good clones from the dispensaries. I've gotten some Blackberry that seemed to stay true to form and some Banana Kush once that looked legit. But most of the time when I go that route, I'm disappointed, so I'm pretty much done going that route. I do currently have two clones that ORIGINALLY came from the dispensary, but turned out pretty dank so I have the genetics going in a hempy bucket in my closet. But for the most part they have been nothing to write home to mum about.

Hello Everyone!

I have tried growing clones from the clubs on a multitude of occasions. almost every time I see the same harvest. little to no resin production on the buds, small amounts of trichomes, and a heavy vegetable aroma. One time an OG kush clone actually produced stinky sticky nugs. This was only one clone out of at least 5 tries all the way to the end. Everytime I let the clones mature to the point where the majority of trichomes are amber, I then hang and dry in closet to the point where it still slightly moist 6-7days, I stick the nugs in jars, and burp for another week or so.

Recently a batch of seeds was started , and i could smell even the vegetative state from far away. the difference was astounding from seeds to clones.

I am left with this conclusion, some clones that are given to some clubs are taken from the weakest phenotype of a type. i.e. clone is ak-47 but it was the genetic runt of the breeder. my reasoning is that if they gave the best phenotypes everyone could grow the best bud, and that would deteriorate the market for said gentic type, because everyone could grow it at home for 10-15$ a pop.

I am very curious as to why purchased clones almost never produced quality, while seeds produced a far more pungent aroma even from the vegetative phase.

please help.
Here's my take on dispensary clones. You don't know the grower; you don't know the caregiver; you don't know the history of the plant. No Matter.

Choose the healthiest clone(s) to go home with. Go straight home. Do NOT take them into your grow area! Put them in QUARANTINE for two weeks, spraying with Neem or Azatrol or some other, fungicide/miticide/insecticide. All the clones I've ever brought home had either fungus gnats already living in the rockwool or mite-eggs, etc. Only once did spider mites ever get into my veg room. Had to kill three plants that were too infested to save easily. Sad. BUT! Never ever again.... Because of my new quarantine area.

Whatever else happens after the clones are clean and healthy is, literally, up to you. Until then though, blame the dirty clones.

Oh, here's my kicker: We grow all organic. So since we don't know the history of new plants, I grow the clone to donor-status and take as many FREE clones as I like and raise them as I like and to hell with the donor. I may flower it or not, but once it's made me several viable clones, which themselves are clonable..., I've got my ROI for the $20 clone. In other words, I don't trust the "outsider" clones enough to put them through the machine with the rest.

Treat your new clones--whether from a store or a best friend forever--as radioactive until quarantine is cleared. Even then.....watch it closely...
