Do I have to keep a mother or can I just take clones from my clones just before I start to flower,

You can take healthy clones all the way up
to harvest. If taken in flower then the plants will have to go into re-veg that takes anywhere from 2 weeks to a couple of months depending on the strain.
Agreed, I've personally cloned 7 days before harvest and the only ill effect was it took forever for the darn thing to reveg.

And it's funny as hell to see just a bud sticking up out of the dirt.

Opposed to a vegging plant a flowering plant is more mature with a more established root system and the lower older branches are more woody so cuttings taken from a mature plant tend to grow more vigorously to the end imo. Most take cuttings in veg for good reason as well I suspect so I think it is a trade off.

I rooted a clone only Blue Dream cutting this big (not mine)

Tho many of my buddies take clones of clones...I prefer to have a mom in her own room,
as I know that in about 10 days those clones would have rooted,
as the previous crop then gets moved to the bud room .
I do that as just personal preference, as I do believe that over time clones do get weaker

...many will disagree my buddies do ..so why not you.?? lo
