After every harvest , I inspect the root balls before i throw them out. With the exception of one strain that grew like an amazon, they are never close to being rootbound. I flower in 5 gallon buckets, and usually fill dirt 2" from the top. Two crops ago, i filled one of them 4" from the top instead of 2", and there was no noticeable difference in the plant growth or the root ball after harvest. So then last crop I filled one of them 6" from the top, and the other 2" for comparison. Again, no difference as far as I can tell. The root balls look the same, real thick at the bottom and almost nothing at the top. Imo when the there are lots of roots sticking out the top of the soil, it needs a bigger pot. When there are no roots at all within the top few inches, there is much room for growth. If the plant is finished and theres still a lot of room for growth, you just wasted some dirt, and a few inches of vertical space, which is often very important in a closet grow.

I cut 4" off the top of these buckets, which also decreased the diameter by 1" since it eliminates the flange.

Today I finally decided on a way to latch the door shut. I have 2 little kids who prowl around the house looking for hidden snacks all the time, I wanted to come up with a way to keep them out. Since the outside closet door has a lock on it, theyre already under the impression i may be hiding junk food in there, thats just how they think. So in order to deter them I made the door appear to open from the opposite side.

The handle on the left side does absolutely nothing. I intentionally stripped the holes it screws into so that if you pull hard it will easily fall off.
On the right side, what appear to be hinges are actually the latches that hold the door shut.

The actual hinge is piano hinge hidden behind the door on the left side.

Im building a cool irrigation system right now to work with the scrog. Should have it tested and finished in a week.

Irrigation System

Problem: When you have more than one or two plants in a scrog, its real hard to water the ones in the middle and back. A regular watering can just cant get through there.
Solution: Run water lines to the plants, just like the hydro guys do.
I had a setup like this when I only grew 2 plants at a time. It worked, but the plants often needed water at different times. So this time around, each plant is going to have an independent watering system. Also, Im doing this on a budget, since my old lady noticed how much I spend on growing equipment lol. For each plant I used 2 soda bottles, regular 2 liter bottles, 5 cents each. Plus a 75 cent 1/4" T fitting, a 90 cent 3/4" thread to 1/4" hose adapter, and about $3 worth of 3/8" clear hose. So just under $5 per plant. Im doing 3 together since I flower my plants in groups of 3.

I cut the base bottles in half and screw them to a board for stability. Also put some double sided tape between the bottles, for more stability.

I cut the bottoms off the reservoir bottles, and epoxy the 1/4" adapters in

This is how they sit

Cut holes in the base bottles for the hose to go through

At the other end, this ring sits on top of the dirt, about 2 inches from the walls of the pot. Water comes in through the T fitting and goes out through tiny holes drilled in it every inch. My camera isnt good enough to show the little holes.

I had been using 4 of those crappy 6" inline booster fans at different locations in air ducts, and 2 of them kicked the bucket already. One was only 6 months old. Junk, you get what you pay for. So I shelled out the cash for a quality 6" inline from HTG, hooked it up at the end and it moved twice as much air as all 4 of the crappy ones together. But it was loud, too loud, so I decided to stick it in a box and line the inside with sound absorbing carpet.

And theres enough room in that box to mount a charcoal filter inside.
Home made charcoal filter all parts from the hvac aisle at home depot:
"Scent control" filter for home furnace $9
6" end cap $2
6" flange $2
(3) 6" hose clamps $3

Air comes into the box through the filter on the bottom left, and blown out through the top right.

Then I took it all out, built some brackets to hold everything, lined the box with sound absorbing carpet from a truck interior, and sealed it up without remembering to take more pics :/

Its much quieter now but not as quiet as Id like it to be. Fan speed controller will be next.

"I went a little overkill with the fans at the other end, 3 of them all in series. That hose has enough suction to pick up garbage off the floor."

Can we get a picture and better description of how your getting the great suction?

So Im not real happy with my fan speed controller. On high it works fine, except its noisy. On medium its supposed to be half power, but according to my volt meter its really more like 1/4 power. And on low it spins so slow that it doesnt actually move any air, and I can stick my hand inside the fan without getting hurt. Im in need of a power setting between medium and high :( Looks like I may have learned another lesson about taking the cheap way out. Now in the market for a variable speed controller.

let us know what you do about a quality speed controller. Something does not hum and destroy your fan. Also can you show me how you stopped the light from coming out of the intake hoses?
