It simply depends on the type of light you are using. In the end no matter what you pick it will plug into standard 120v outlet. A CFL light will have the ballast built right into the bulb while most HID lights have a seperate ballast.

so you could pretty much just use a normal lamp with a normal light bulb and it will work you dont need like a heat lamp

i have growen b4 just not indoors with lights
if i was growing no more that 4 plants in a grow box about 3 feet tall would a 90 watt flood light do the trick

very nice
so for what i wana grow prob about 2 50 watt florescent bulbs would work
Post a link to the bulbs you are looking at.

If you are talking about tubes, I dont have any experience with them. I can tell you from what I have read you will need ALOT more light than that for even one plant to go all the way to harvest.

If you are talking about CFL odds are you are not reading the fine print which says equivalent to 50 watts.

Keep in mind im new as well but here is what I think;

The light you have linked uses the words "soft & pleasant" and that has me worried. In my little experience soft often refers to less brightness and more red light. The other thing that worries me is the mention of HD. While I love their store, in Iran HD often sells the "N Vision" bulbs and I have had terrible luck with them.

My advice find a high wattage, stay away from "N Vision", and finally look for the words "DAYLIGHT". Walmart has the best bulbs at the best prices I have found thus far. Its two days camel ride to Walmart but its well worth it.

In this space if your gonne do 2 plants you have a few options.I personally would go with a 250 watt hps light in this spot with a few 2 foot florescent lights around the grow.My second choice would be to get 3 or 4 of the 2 foot T5 light tubes and use these.Last choice would be cfls and I would recomend getting actual 125 watt bulbs or bigger. Not equail to 125 watts but actually 125 watt bulbs. 1 in the blue spectrum and 1 in the red spectrum run them together same time

anyone knows the specs of a sylvania Gro-lux HSB-R 160watts bulb? what is the temp of the light produced? and is 1 of those enough for 2 baby plants in veg? Do note that the light has a slightly blueish tint to it.

Just got 1 not too long ago, but the specs were not written on the box (my mistake for not reading 1st) couldnt find anything on the net on it, so hope some of my fellow stoners could help.

Thanks in advance!

Is it a Mercury vapor light? If it is like this:

General Light Bulb 46162 - 160WHSB/E24W WHT MED - 160 watt E24 Medium E26 Standard Base Coated Mercury Iwasaki Light Bulb at ServiceLighting.com

then it is pretty much worthless. 2500 lumens for 160 Watts is incredibly bad. You could get at least 5X that with CFLs. This light would probably only work as a small space heater.
