Andrew Murie, chief executive officer of MADD Canada, said road safety must be paramount as part of that plan.


He urged the government not to legalize marijuana before police have the proper tools and training in place, and before the public is sufficiently educated about the dangers of being stoned behind the wheel.


"In the ideal world, the drug-impaired legislation would come first and then Health Canada would spend a year educating Canadians, especially parents, on the risk of cannabis use, closing the illegal dispensaries followed by the start of legal recreational marijuana sales through a public health model," he said.

Yep, a case in Saskatchewan was thrown out because even though a woman was proven to have THC in her blood they couldn't prove impairment.

I have no idea why MADD is obsessed with treating a substance they know isn't alcohol to be treated like alcohol, but they seem set on passing draconian laws that are likely to be challenged (successfully) in court. MADD's excuse for this is 'well the cops that are trained to detect impairment are expensive to train'. So?

Phelan (or a past MMJ ruling) stated that 'training / inspections cost money' isn't an excuse for the government.

I found the use of this particular word most alarming.
It's a terribly slippery slope for the gov or hc to use this word because in the medical world someone who is deemed "catastrophic" is someone unable to work ever again.
And someone taking 8-10 perks a day plus 4-5grams of mj following their guidelines of not driving for 3-4 hours after use would make a lot of folks "catastrophic."
Get ready for a few billion more in disability and pension spending.

there are too many anti's in positions of power....
we need to remove them from power....in every case...

Madd is the most disgusting bunch of lying tea toddling alcohol prohibitionists we have. They pay themselves huge salaries to simply state lies and exaggeration. It nothing more than a propped up business. This is their latest campaign to keep the gravy flowing. They make their living off of fear and lies. All the while pretending to be doing something.
Fuck they make me puke. And I hope they all get what they deserve someday as well.

I agree 1000% madd should stick to alcohol because if the drunk drivers who killed there love ones would have picked up a bong instead of a bottle...... There love ones would likely still be alive..... So fuck off madd and go back to alchol protests

He said the situation will become more grave when marijuana is legalized, yet the government does not have a strategy.

So 100years of prohibition wasn't enough time to teach the cops anything.

I am a victim of drug impaired driving and the laws in sask made it so we couldn't get a drug impaired conviction since there were no guidelines and not enough legal restriction.
Impaired cannabis convictions are still very hard to hold up in court.
The pos guy who nearly killed me and my. mother has coke e and meth in his system and since the possibility of an impaired driving conviction is difficult to have since there are no set standards for drug levels in the blood.
So he got a deal for two counts of dangerous driving causing injury.

That's terrible hope all is well. I agree they should be looking into oxy coke mdma etc driving but leave cannabis alone. I have drove on cannabis since 16 with no prob I am now double that. Just my 2 cents if the gov actually gave a shit about drugged driving they would already have a test in place for coke heroin etc they don't and reffer madness goes on

Yet the rate of charges for driving under the influence of drugs remains very low compared to alcohol-related charges.


That was my favorite line of bullshit. Nice and vague with the wording.
I'm sure middle aged soccer mom, high on oxys, didn't get charged. Or any other of the thousands of 'drugs'.

Impairment due to cannabis is going to be hard to prove....people become mellow, they eat, they laugh, they go to sleep....people are allowed to use their discretion to drive with all the goodies big pharma can provide.
