Curing Day 3 - Grass Smell - Humidity not rising?

Hey all, today my buds have been curing for 3 days and ive been burping the jars once a day. I have my hydrometer in one of the jars, the humidity doesnt seem to be going over 60% in the jar when being in for over 12 hours. If i continue curing will grassy smell eventually leave? Thanks

The grassy smell left mine after awhile. But I'm only on my second cure. The experts will be around soon to help you.

Thanks for the reply, did you wait til your jar got up to 70% RH before burping the first time? I waited til 60% because i read that anything more could create mold. Could the early first burp be why its still there or will it be gone in a week or so?

How long did you dry before putting them into jars?

If it's still at 60% in the jar, there still may be hope that it will mellow with the cure, much less and it's better luck next time.

I try to extend my dry period as long as possible, so I hang the whole plant. Can get out 10+ days of just drying before I start putting it into jars to cure.

I cut each branch from the plant and hung them, it was my first grow ive yeilded 25g dry. Hung for 4 days and jarred. You think the grass smell will leave? When i squeeze the bud and smell my fingers it smells good. but smelling the jar and actual buds smells like grass. What do i do!!!

All you can do is jar it and keep your humidity levels where they are. If your humidity drops below 55%, the cure stops. I'd just seal it upat the 60% you have it at and leave it for a few weeks.

Alright thanks for the help. Was my problem that i didnt let it raise to 70% RH this first time? and from there it just got lower? or did i not dry long enough or dry too long?

I got some cheese not too far ahead of you, the peak "hay" smell was on day 4 in the jars and in the two days since it has diminished quite a lot. Funny this grassy (more like hay) smell was particularly strong this time around; might be the strain cause it's my first cheese run.

Nope I simply opened the jars each evening and each morning and sniffed. If it smelled bad I'd let it air for a little bit and then put the lid back on. Slowly it changed to smelling good. I can't tell you how long I waited for the smell to go away but it took awhile. Essentially the jars started smelling better quicker and quicker until finally I no longer opened them for air. I've opened them to check (from my 5/2012 harvest) and they still smell great. The scent just keeps changing and getting more complex as it ages.

I wouldnt let it air out every day, your on the border of it being to dry to cure.Seal it up and wait a few weeks.

You need to hang out in H&C more ^^
Nothing better than pertinent information being spread.

Your buds are trash... Had this prob on my first grow years back. The shit never got good. My grows now, the bud smells good from the day I chop them, when they are drying, the day I put them in the jar, till the day I pull them out to smoke. I don't pay attention to the rh or none of that shit.

what would have made it trash? I hung it for 4 days then straight to jar, outside of buds were dry and stems made a crack sound but didnt snap.. Did I harvest too early? im into my second grow now just need to know what the problem of this smell is!

It was directed towards spandy, in an attempt to acknowledge people who put out pertinent information.
There is so much misinformation on cannabis forums that I was just happy to see that the two posts I'd read which spandy posted were both logical and helpful.

I would say yes, harvested early. Or maybe a deficiency or lockout may have caused the buds to not release the maximum resins or terpenes.. Dunno with out seeing them or your grow.

If they have a drecent amount of trichs, learn how to make a canna butter or something where you can still enjoy your work without having to taste grassy or hay smelling pot.

Leave the Lids on the jars for a couple of days and check the RH on your hygrometer daily. Stop burping them if your worried about your humidity being too low, causing the bad smell. Hopefully your RH will rise as you draw more of the moisture out of the inside of the buds, just leave the lids on and don't open the jars until they reach at least 62-65, that is if they still contain enough moisture. I've read that it can take up to four days to get an accurate reading. Just hope they have not dropped below the 55% cure zone or else... better luck next time. Good Luck!

Hey,

Sorry if anyone has written something similar, I try not to read much as there is so much misinformation out there.

Here is how you should have harvested:

Cut small branches and trim all buds

Lay the buds down or hang them up in a COOL room (60-65F). Your humidity should be at 50-55%.

Leave the buds until they stems clearly snap- You must check the buds once a day during the drying process, make sure you notice the stems snap as soon as they're at the snapping point, if they continue to dry much longer then curing is not possible. *Many people will tell you to jar them before the stems snap and that if they're snapping then you've gone to far and all hope is lost... not true!

From here just jar the buds in a CLEAN DRY jar. I like to pack my buds in there good so they can cook in their own sweat. I will uncap the jar for 30 mins each day for 2-3 weeks. Roughly 3 weeks into the curing process the buds will kick out that stinky citrus smell we all know and love.

Something fun to try:

During the curing process, after 7 days in, leave the jar in the refrigerator over night. Smell in the morning, then cap it till later in the afternoon and pop her open and give a whiff. You'll notice a strong bud smell and you will be able to smell the humidity built up. If you've done everything right the jar might even give a little pop- mine does :)

The overnight cooling and then slow thaw while jarred helps redistribute moisture and bring out that great smell.
