Could be anything...or...genetics...

Make sure the bud was tried properly before putting into cure. Also, how long have you been curing for?

When I started curing the bud felt crispy on the outside but the stem still didn't snap. I heard a lot of people like to cure just before the stem snaps so I did it that way. I've only been curing for about 24 hours, the bud feels moist again but ive been burping the jars quite a bit. I really don't think it should smell like this.. it almost makes me sick to smell it. I haven't found any mold either so I don't know what is going on but my weed sucks.

I always wait until the stem snaps, and then put it into a paper bag for a month, then into mason jars. It sounds like your buds aren't dry enough and the humidity in your jars are high, which could cause mold. 24 hours is too early, the longer the better.

So cal is right but to each his own i say. I let my buds dry for 3-4 days (My Humidity sucks ass stay around 16%) Then i put them straight into the jar. Usually they will have a bit of a hay smell but curing takes way more then a day Give then a good week or 2. Also Brake open a bud does it smell then? Genetics also did she smell good on the plant you say she had a weird smell

Should I leave my jars open? The buds are pretty moist.. I just started curing because the buds are pretty airy so when they felt crispy I thought I waited to long already. They felt like they were going to turn to dust if I squeezed hard enough. Lol

I cure my bud the same way. However I do something different which may help you out.

Firstly it takes over 2 weeks for the true aroma to develop not 24hours.

Secondly I jar mine when the bud Is crispy but the stem still Bends.

then I leave the jar closed for 12hours
then after 12 hours I empty the now moist bud out of the jars and allow to re-crisp before placing back into the jars for a further 12hours. Then repeat.

I keep doing this until the buds stop being moist when I open the jar, this is when I begin burping the jars every 12 hours leaving the lids off for around 3-5mins then seal back up.

I hope this has helped.

Pretty close to what you do except I put the lid the back on when it felt moist. I'll empty the jars out and see how this helps! Thanks man!

If the smell is so unpleasant that it makes you sick, you probably have bud rot that you didn't see or haven't discovered yet. If you did something wrong that affected the overall potency or other characteristic, it would smell off, it would smell weak, but it should never smell nauseating.

The grassy smell is simply the green chlorophyll evaporating. If you jar them before enough has evaporated, it'll sweat through your buds and you have grassy smelling/tasting bud. If it's already dry and it still smells/tastes grassy, you fucked up big time.

Yeah man this smell is horrible.. this is my first grow but ive seen and been around quite a few plants and I actually remember one of my buddies plants smelling something like this when he harvested it.. maybe its just a fresh cut bud smell, and i really just don't like the smell.. but im not sure, it makes me not even want to smoke it though. What do your plants smell like when there fresh cut? And I've been looking at some buds with my microscope and cant see anything but trichomes and pistils..

The plant had an odd smell when she was growing to but when you pinch a bud it smelled really fruity or something but now its nothing like that smell.

1. Your bud is not curing. It's not even dry yet.

2. Curing takes a hell of a lot longer than 24 hours.

3. Some weed does smell like shit. My post from another forum:

I was watching a program about wine tasting the other day. Among the various tastes and smells associated with wine, most of them very pleasant and appetizing, there's another - the smell of a cow patty. In essence, the smell of shit. It is sometimes described as earthy or mushroom-like, but at the end it all comes down to smelling like cow dung. IME, we can draw a parallel to Canna. Sometimes, an individual or two from a given strain will exhibit a similar smell. Curing over an extended period in optimal conditions can relive the smell of cow patty to some extent and replace it with an underlying smell commonly associated with that strain. Other times, it keeps smelling like crap, just a bit more mellow.

Depends on the strain, but here is what my fresh cut smell experience has been generally.

Growers, don't get too hypnotized by that awesome smell when they're growing in late bloom. When you kill them, the grassiness you couldn't smell in life will crawl out. This is normal as it's the smell of the chlorophyll deactivating... beginning its first stages of evaporation. If you block or turn off your light abruptly during late bloom, you'll smell it.

So harvesting and drying is really a contest between the sweet smell of the bud's potency and the grass smell of this deactivated chlorophyll releasing. If you don't let that chlorophyll grass taste leave the bud enough from drying, you risk retaining grassiness in your jars.

My bud will smell killer while they're alive and right after harvest, but after a few days of hanging, the grassy smell of the evaporating chlorophyll comes out. I used to be alarmed by this as a rookie before I became more familiar with the process. Now I see it as normal.
