Cutting fan leaves

Ok Uncle Ben, and whoever else is completely knowledgeable in this subject.

Question= If a big fan leaf is covering a bud site on the top of a plant, would the bud still be able to grow since no real light is shining on it?

Would the bud be smaller without the fan leaf? Or bigger with it on??

Yes? No?

It just doesnt seem possible for a plant "to bud at a site" with a huge fan leaf blocking all of the light

Ive wondered about this for 10 years.

Personally, I remove em if there blocking a juicy bud site.

+rep for an experienced answer, and or a logical explanation. Or better yet someone who has experimented with this stuff. Thx :bigjoint:
It comes down to buds don't create energy..leaves do(as well as other green parts containing chlorophil(to a much lesser extent).http://www.google.com/m/url?cd=1&client=safari&ct=res&ei=skebS5jiMIGOqQOszreaAQ&hl=en&oe=UTF-8&oi=blended&q=http://www.rollitup.org/general-marijuana-growing/8930-trimming-fan-leaves-consensus-part.html&resnum=1&sa=X&usg=AFQjCNFR28zCUZuXzAINEelLFE9zzocFiA

nice little read

Would you cut off all the leaves of your favorite tomato plant? Or Tree or anything else that uses them to grow?

Ive heard all of this before...sigh..

Ive done my research, same scenario, same posts pretty much.

No one actually told me if a bud gets bigger, or smaller if a fan leaf is covering the bud site/cola..

I'll answer your question with a few questions - Does the bud site have more leaf mass than one fan leaf? What is photosynthesis? Why does a shaded apple bulk up and ripen?

Get off the forum hype and learn some botany. This is what you get when you focus on botany rather than forum hype. Production is about the ability to produce and maintain healthy fan leaves until harvest:

Next noob that poses this tired old question is gonna get their nutes cut off!

there's nothing wrong with cutting leaves that are in the way. but only cut if you can't tuck. if i have a big fan leaf that is blocking more leaves/budsites than it would be benefiting, it's gone. if it's way under the main canopy and not getting any direct light, i'll cut it. if it's absorbing light from the astro-foil that i have all around the plants, i'll leave it. one thing to remember if you do decide to trim, don't do too much at one time. it could cause them undue stress and shock em. this is a subject that will "never" be agreed upon, lol. you just have to do it and find out for yourself. nice bud u.b.!

actually it seems as if new growth is coming on faster on the top. GENTLEMAN THERE WILL BE CASUALTIES. ive grown enuff pot normally and femmed and topped and trained but ive never really pushed the limits as all the plants were sewed to harvest. these experiments are expendable like a tampon and i plan on pushing limits for future grows and all around knowledge first hand of what more can i do to the bitches. stunting growth right now is a priority. i want a mature short not spoiled pot plant that looks weired out...could i get a bonzai outta this i wonder
Just my opinion, but I think you would be better off fucking with breeding different strains. Then you have an Idea what you have coming. I hate seeds so I always stayed away from that but you could maybe come up with some super hot strain and make the name famous!
Good luck brobongsmilie

my name is shit and will always be shit but thanx for the vote of confidence.....neways it looks as if something inside me says "go for bonsai pot garden" like 20 plants less than a foot tall with yields of 2 or 3 grams......i could seriously get away with that as opposed to ne thing bigger.........stealth back yard gentleman.....im a kook and (lmao) a newb, yeah right.....wait till harvest and u guys pm me if i aint showin the goods and ripp me another butthole for being experimental......i can read and read what other people have done but there is no experience like the one you manifest yourself.....(that sounded prettybad ass right there) keep yall posted.......dont worry there will be buds......

If your growing in the sunlight, intensity isn't a problem and your experiment will reveal reduced growth and stunting. Its only helpful if you are growing indoors under a bulb. where undergrowth that is not receiving much light anyway can be removed without much loss in growth in the hopes that once the stress subsides, the plant will be more efficient at gathering light from its limited lightsource; translating into larger harvests in the end.

That is just so wrong where to begin? The plant whether it is indoors or outdoors uses the fan leaves to produce the end product which is healthy flowers, and to reproduce. Find me a plant or tree that has less leaves and produces more fruit. It simply doesn't happen.

You must not be familiar with SCROG is all i have to say. The point is this. The farther away from the bulb the less usable light is available to make flowers with. When you prune the lowest branches and leaves this forces the plant to prioritize its top growth that is close to the bulb. The idea is to get as much of the plant as close to the light as possible and when many plants are so close together, many lollipop/remove the lower branches that will not produce much and thus are a waist of energy using nutrients and what not to construct. Not to mention even though you are removing parts of the plant, consider the roots havent lost any size.

If the light is intense enough then I agree but if it is not, I will argue pruning when done correctly helps yield.
