Cutting roots when transplanting

I heard a while ago that when transplanting, using a sharp clean knife to make 4 cuts through the each side bottom roots will promote healthy root growth. I have been doing this since i started growing. Does anyone else do this?

Uhhm.. 4 cuts for each root? Theres like gotta be hundreds dependign on the size of it...
