Misleading. The statutory tax rates might have been exceedingly high in the past, but the loopholes were just as formidable. People with high incomes just paid accountants and lawyers to find tax shelters that would lower their tax bills and the government missed tons of revenue. The reduction of statutory tax rates didn't result in colossal revenue shortfalls.

Taxation is not what made the middle class strong and it never has been. Indeed, I would assert that the middle class weakened itself with its support of big businesses, which "save" consumers money by reducing costs--meaning more automation, paying workers less, etc. Middle class support of national, centralized businesses--from Starbucks to McDonalds to Wal-Mart to AT&T and beyond--crippled a significant group of traditional service providers, who went bankrupt and out of business. Consequently, instead of remaining in local communities and with local people, wealth was concentrated into the hands of the owners of the big businesses.

Taxation will not solve this problem. Every time any consumer patronizes a large national business they concentrate more wealth at the top.
