As the disconnect of the politicians grows further and further from the people, I am reminded of this day in 1996 when Hillary Clinton helped to remove an art exihbit which she never even witnessed herself. How disconnected is our politicians when they wont even view the artwork which they helped to ban? I think this case illustrates it well.
Offended?
Multiple award winning London based Nigerian artist Chris Ofili (and devout christian) , in Nigeria paintings are made from elephant dung as an expression of honor, his painting of the Virgin Mary went on display in New York, A christian group got offended and said it was anti-christian and they wrote letters to get the painting banned. Cathedral Cardinal John O'Connor called Ofili's painting "an attack on religion itself." The U.S. Senate passed a non-binding voice vote to cut federal funding from the museum. While Rudy Juliani was the main driving political force behind this Hillary Clinton added her two cents worth of fear and ignorance--by declaring that, while censorship of the museum was 'not appropriate,' she would not set foot in the museum to see the offensive work and ultimately agreed to have the funding revoked for this painting which she had never witnessed.
