A man was formally charged Thursday in the death of a 59-year-old Denver resident whose shooting police say involved a medical marijuana transaction.

Peter Bellar, 25, has been charged with first-degree murder and aggravated robbery, both felonies, according to a press release from the Denver District Attorney's Office.

Bellar is charged with shooting and killing Douglass Singleton at 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday while trying to rob Singleton's home in the 2600 block of Leyden Street.
Bellar was also wounded and has been treated.

Both men were shot inside the home when one man pulled a gun and shot the other, Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson said on Tuesday. He said that the incident involved a "medical marijuana transaction."

Singleton's neighbor Sadie Latta said Tuesday that Singleton used oxygen for health reasons and described him as "frail." Latta told The Post she heard Singleton planned to sell medical marijuana.

Denver police spokeswoman Sharon Avendano said Thursday she could not confirm whether or not Singleton was licenced to use or sell medical marijuana.

Allen Grider, who said Tuesday he was a friend of Singleton, said Singleton was a Vietnam veteran who had obtained a medical-marijuana patient's card a few months ago.

On Monday afternoon, Bellar will be formally advised of the charges in Denver County Court.

My biggest nightmare is getting robbed. I got plenty of fire power but still ya never know, there was a reason they used to stone people in the streets back in the day to make sure no one else even thought of doing what that guy did.

Yep, the more stories like this, the more the public turns against us.......Yesterday they were claiming Mexican drug cartels had shipped people here to grow on government land and claiming it's all organized crime.........first of all, if it's legal, how can it be organized crime?? And second, if the mexican cartels could grow the dank instead of dirt weed......we wouldn't all be growing our own. It's no different than the BS when they claimed we were supporting terrorists if we bought weed.....
They offered no proof whatsoever that mexican cartels were involved.........." Our sources tell us...blah, blah ,blah....You mean your boss sez so, so we should all panic and vote against the evil weed.

Pro weed advocates.........come on over.....move to CO, register and vote....before the misinformed masses shoot it down because the propaganda machine is running full steam......

Who cares about the legal shit, DO WHAT YOU DO, keep it to yourself and such and it won't matter.

I don't let the shit heads tell me what is moral, they think it's ok to kill/abort babys/fetuses so how in the sweet flying fuck are they in a position to tell me Im wrong for growing and smoking some Bud, when they won't put down life row inmates.

This is why I'm not interested in growing more then I need for my households own (legal) personal use. There are just too many jerks out there that will try to rip you off for me to feel comfortable trying to sell it, especially out of my own home.

There's just too much cash floating around in the business and making it an attractive target for thieves and other assorted low lifes currently. When all the growers, sellers, etc get to the point that they start paying each other with checks, credit cards and electronic funds transfers (you know, like most normal businesses do already) the thieves will move on to easier pickings and most of the crime associated with the business will go away. Both growers and sellers need to be thinking about security though, and I'm not talking about fire power. You need to think like a business- you only keep enough cash on hand to make change and put the rest someplace secure (like a floor mounted safe with a drop slot). You only keep enough merchandise out for display and small sales, and keep the rest in a secured store room that only you/you're employees can access. You put in security cameras, and make sure you have signs prominantly posted to discourage potential thieves (won't stop a pro, but most thieves aren't). Ideally you never let anyone know where your goods are stored or where you grow them at. There are a lot of things you can do to make yourself safer if you're in the business, you just need to take the time to think about them and be willing to accept the added expense.
