Desert Sativa's 2011 Garden

I decided to go all out this year. I have always had some potted plants around the pool, but this year I really am making the most of my back yard. Besides adding lots of potted plants, I built two 4'x8' raised planting beds so I added quite a bit more of garden space.

Anyways, here is what I got going this year. I still need to get dirt for the second one, and frankly, can't believe how much it took to fill just the one! In here besides the marigolds and other flowers are Blueberris, Blackberries, squash, watermelon, zuchini, 4 tomato plants, 5 pepper plants and I think that is it.

And if you want peppers, I got peppers! I have Red, Green, and Orange Bell, Thai chilli, Serano, Habenaro, Anaheim, Ghost, and probably a few more. Anyways, here are some pepper pictures:

Some tomatoes:

Herbs (Few different basils, greek oregano, catnip, thyme, and cilantro)

And Finally 3 Rows of corn:

Anyways, thanks for looking and check back soon for updates. I also have to plant the second bed, so maybe you can help me decide what goes in there!

I am going to plant some beans along the edges to grow up the net. Also I might train the zuchini or cucumber to grow up too. I might throw some Mary Jane's in the garden, so the net when filled up with vegetation will act as a fence to block view from people peeking over the fence. Luckily the neighbor's that live in the house next door to the garden only live here during the winter months and have already gone to their summer home so I am stoked for that.

OK. I am actually pretty new to vegetable gardening so any help and advice is greatly appreciated. What do you think about having water melon or pumpkin growing up the net? I don't really care about actually harvesting watermelons and pumpkins except for maybe a few for fun, so I can cut off the fruits if they weigh down the net too much.

water melon and pumpkin will work as well but like you say it might get a bit heavy, cantaloupe will work to. the reason why zuchini would not work well is cuz it does not vine out when it grows.

I have zucchini in a planter box right now and use chicken wire as a sort of trellis for it by tying the wire around the box to fence it in and letting it grow up and over. Seems to be working well for me and it keeps the vines off of the concrete patio

Here are quite a bit of pictures for you all to check out. All my peppers have started to flower and quite a few are already producing fruit. Same goes with the tomato plants. I am not going to state what each pepper is individually but if anyone has questions or wants to see specific pictures, let me know!

Just a few pictures I haven't posted that I like.

I am from Oregon, so I had to grow some blackberries. Kind of funny since in Oregon they are kind of the thorny weed from hell and now I want them to grow like crazy!

I have a question about your raised bed. What is it made of? And where did you get the connectors that connect the boards together? The first raised bed I made I used an old waterbed frame. About 3 years ago, it's starting to rot now. Lowes or Home depot has theirs on sale, 4x4 size so it only comes with the corner connectors.

i used wood at first and then switched to concrete block to make them. no rotting plus they make nice planters to.

desertsative the whole garden is looking great. i thought it was funny you are growing the black berries, i seen them at the store for sale and i thought who would buy black berry plants they grow all over wildly here and good to. im from grants pass oregon, what part you from?

I am from the Portland area and graduated from the U of O. Yeah, I might have to do a lot of pruning of the blackberry, but that is what the net is for too. I need to get some fertilizer in the planting beds. There is a local organic farm that sells bags of compost and that is what the beds are filled with but it doesn't seem to act like it has really any nutrients in it. The plants in the bed are growing and alive, but aren't growing anything near to the plants in containers with potting soil.

right on, its cool to see other orgonians on here. do you cover your plants at all. or does it not get that cold up theri now. cuz if it warm enough up north then it should be good to plant outside here in souther Oregon as well.
