Designing my first grow room - input is welcome!

Howdy all,

Getting started on my first (and likely last unless I move) grow room. I've been working like a dog full days the last two weekends in order to get to this point, that being a clean shop and totally dedicated to indoor growing.

The room is big enough at 7 ft. 6 in. wide, and a tad over 15 ft. in length.

I got to thinking today as I was working out there that if I changed the door to a swing-out design rather than swing-in I could gain some extra working space.

I would like to make 2 separated 5 ft. X 4 ft. growing areas, one for flowering and another for vegging. In most cases I'll never have more than 8 plants in either phase of growth, as I am growing strictly for my own legal medical use and a bit of research into new blends which may offer better treatment for my illness.

For lighting I'm thinking one 600 Watt cool-tube for each area (MH and HPS), and cooling ventalation will not be an issue, as I can access two exterior walls and will be installing large intake/exhaust vents. I am more concerned keeping the room sufficiently warm in the cold winter months here, although all walls are well insulated, but still we can get near 0 degree F temps in the mid-winter months.

So, how would you lay this room out if it was yours to build? Cost, to be honest, really isn't too big a deal as I've set aside about $1500 to use as construction funds (including lights). I've also already purchased a good bit of the materials, and am re-using some from a previous building project.

i'd seperate it into a veg room at 3x3 with a 600w mh and a 5x5 witha 1000w hps...

do 9 plants in each... will fill each room nice... .air cool each light...

you coud also have a mom/clone room 2x4 ft int there too...

good luck... you can do a lot with that space!!!

Thanks IAN, by the way, I see you are "just north of the border", well, I'm not too far south of the border between the lower BC mainland and WA. state.

My OP in this thread sounds awful formal...fact is, aside from the medical use of the herb I love a great smoke too! Smoked much in my 20's recreationally, and started back in the days of the "4 finger lid" of Columbian, which basically meant 10 bongloads and you would get a little buzz and a big headache :spew:

Todays weed is far, FAR superior, as quality of the weed has grown with the technology to grow better crops.

btw, why only a 3 x 3 veg room when I have so much space? Were you suggesting the 1000W lamp for the flowering?

well, only a 3x3 veg room... cuz you'd still have the mother and clone room, and once the clones take root, you put them in the veg room...
why i suggested a 3x3 is for a few reasons... your plants are only gonna be about 1/2 or 1/3 of there total size at their biggest point in veg, plus, you have to think of how the light your using is covering the plants... a 600w mh adequately covers about 3.5 square ft... a bigger room filled with plants will have the ones furthest from the light stretching...

"In most cases I'll never have more than 8 plants in either phase of growth, as I am growing strictly for my own legal medical use and a bit of research into new blends which may offer better treatment for my illness"

i can understand the plant number limit... but having nine vegging and nine flowering makes more sense, you can much more easily fill a square room with nine plants than 8

as in instead of
X X X ....X X X
X X X .....X X
X X X.... X X X

get me? (and if you use square pots, you can maximize the amount of space being used by the pots...)

and yeah, the 1000w hps is for the flowering room... its 150000 lumens ready to plump your buds up nicely!!! and if venting and cooling and energy isn't too big of a problem, then the big ones the way to go...

i hope that makes sense and helps some... just keep askin questions if you got them!!!

Howdy Ian,

Wow...you put some time in those drawings...many thanks!

Not sure it'll lay out just that way...I'll be doing some more design on it late this evening when I have more free time.

So far I have purchased only the most basic of supplies, as I wanted to make up a "shopping list" for High Tech Garden and shoot for the best discounts. (I'm not in a big rush, but want to get this completed within a couple weeks time and get to growing my med's instead of spending $300 a mo. for off the street herb that is not always varieties that are best for my illness).

I'll shoot some pics of the room (empty) as soon as I can get it....empty:peace: (which should be tonight if'n I can "Get 'Er Done").

if youre looking for warmth in winter use the lights. my 400w hps keeps my 5' by 6' at 80 degrees until i shut them off.
i'm no pro by any means but it seems to work. good luck dude

lights on during night... off during day... this will usually take care of temp problems...

but i live in the desert... and it never really gets cold indoors in my apt. lol...

but yeah... lights ON at night... OFF during day...
