I thought Id get started and I am already running into issue number 1, my cheap Chinese light has no heat sink :/

when I bought this lamp it was advertised as 1200w, which I knew wasn't the case coze I think I paid $400 for but I thought it would be ok for the time being. That was until I noticed how hot this lamp was running compared to other leds I have so it would be the first lamp to be converted to COBs.

Ill post some pics tomorrow, but its really disappointing now I think I'm gonna have to order proper heat sink, I ll take a look at whats in the 100W diamond and whats in the blackstar240 to see if there is enough in there to run 4 COBs, but I am on the look out for the proper heat sink for 4 cobs to retrofit this lame super grow lamp.

I was gonna post a little budporn but I had the wide lens on the camera ... so plant porn instead! Blue City Diesel a few days from chopy chop chop.

Here is the casing I want to use for the first built, gonna look up heatsink usa to see if I can find a match, as you can see I totally got ripped off with this light, I should know better lol... no heatsink and nothing but the cheapest components. I still cant believe there was no heat sink... it was more of a heater in the room. I guess my first DIY is gonna have a $400 casing hehe

Frosty looking stuff there grower. Maybe Santa will bring me some of that for Christmas lol.

Mmmm, I'd go with the 5.8 x 36 as Greengenes suggested.
Supra does not have the exact specs listed for the 12" profile, but it's pretty much the same surface area as the 10", with a little bit more.

I'll show you my math-
5.8" x 36" = 260cm2 x 36" = 9360cm2 total surface area <----- As suggested

12" x 12" = (1.2)468cm2 x 12" = 6739cm2 total surface area <------Your idea
Here I multiplied the surface area per inch of the 10" profile by 1.2 to estimate the surface area of the 12" profile (same riser/fin height)

As you can see, the 5.88" x 36" profile provides roughly 33% more surface area than the 12" x 12"

What dimensions are you covering?

I understand you want to use the old case, but putting a heatsink in there that'll fit it won't solve anything...you'd just have a brighter heat box than before. The 12×14 wil only be able to cool ~170watts actively. You could use that case/sink with different cobs and less watts in the future, but not this build.

Also, placing 4 cobs on a piece like that won't provide ideal spread like separate bars or cpu coolers would. Those COBs can cover 1 -1.5 sq ft each no problem.

I would either go with cpu coolers for all or the 5.8 x36...no 12x14. Just trying to save you some heat issues. I cheaped out a bit on the sinks for one of my builds and ended up ordering new ones because they were running too hot.
My other light running cpu coolers is doing great and the breeze from the fans get the canopy swayin without a seperate dedicated circulation fan.

This is the kind of video I've been looking for! So kick ass! So that looked pretty damned bright even at 1400mas. I plan in doing 2100b on just 3 3590's I can't even imagine what that'll be like.

I kinda regret doing the DIY to be honest, not because of how hard or easy it is but because of how much time I have to spend researching and building. By the time I am done with it, I will have spent around $1200 canadian or more for 400 watts of light, so 3$ a watt, which is more than I have ever paid for a light, granted it will be the best lights I own but if I had known I probably would have bought the pacific light concept cx300 for around $1300 canadian and 340 watts... and a warranty.

I cant make up my mind whether to order from heatsinkusa or order cooling cpu fans from newegg.ca .... all the heatsink I have in my old fero are too small... can I glue together heatsinks with thermal adhesive and get similar results? I am lost I wish I could go back in time and order a Tasty or a PLC ready made fixture. If a51 had been updating the website most people here know I would have simply bought a few more of those....

Its alright man, you got this! You'll have those badass lights finished soon and experience to go with it. Yes you gotta do research and put in a lot of effort and stuff but that's part of moving away from being a consumer and becoming a producer.... just like everything you had to research going from an herb buyer to ganja farmer. Stay upful!

Don't try to glue together sinks...it won't work like you'd want it to. Both hsusa and cpu coolers involve the same amount of labor time. Fans have a chance of failing, and a big hs will be fine for a bit of time without the fan blowing. Cpu coolers would fry the cob if the fan fails. Big sinks are heavy but neater, coolers are lighter but consume a bit more power. Also with big sinks you're got a little less flexibility...you can have 4 cobs at different heights with the cpu coolers. Something to think about if your setup has an uneven canopy.

omg ....I have started opening up old fixtures, the heat sinks were either non existent back then or really small and useless. Looking at my lights only the A51 have decent heatsinks, especially the new w90s.

I just ordered 2 x 5.886 x 36 heat sinks from hsusa ... almost $300 cad with shipping ... I may add thermal adhesive to my order, which of the 2 ?

If it makes you feel any better here's a comparison:

To equal the output of your new hand-built light you would have to purchase 6 of those w90s.

I'm no canuck, so I'll use usd. To build your light would cost me about $800. To buy 6 x w90s would be $1100. The light you built uses 140w less to do the exact same job.

Sure you've never paid $3/W but we don't want to buy watts. We want to buy photons.

Good luck with the build! I promise when you're finished you'll never buy another prefab!

I use Arctic Silver 5. You're able to remove it later if you need to without damaging the cob.

I'm stoked for you man you're gonna love that light! Plenty of support behind you RIU is LED school lol . Like nogod said you'll never buy another prefab!

Don't worry breathe n have a spliff coz I want to see what you grow !!! And trust me when its done and u know YOU made that light you made the photons perfect n grew a kick ass yield ..self achievement. It will feel like the first time u smoked ur own ...worth it

Best bit..anything goes wrong u can gut that bitch knowing its life and how to resuscitate it lol

I know I wont regret building the lights, I guess I am a bit too busy for a DIY. It is true that this could be the firsts of many builds, but Im gonna whine until I have the lights working lol. Thanks guys for the support, I will get the heatsinks within a week and hopefully will be posting pics then, or questions lol

I have not done a test grow with the diys, I simply trust that they work, they run fairly cool, I need to grow some plants start to finish under them before I know for sure. I saw the link advertised YouTube video but technically I won't have to spend money on light for 10years!!
