I have a little project...

I was about to order Green Sunshine Company leds and when I saw the final price... I thought, why don't you go the DIY route? :d

My goal is to replace a 1000 watts double ended in terms of yield and quality. The current space for that DE is 30 sq ft (70x62). I don't mind using the same wattage, if I could shave off some radiant heat, I guess it will be enough to save on A/C, plus, I won't have to replace the bulb each few grows.

Strips : SI-B8VZ91B20WW (Samsung F-strip gen 3) 3000k cri 80. 3000K | 17340 lm | 168 lm/W (4FT STRIP)
Drivers: 2x HLG-480H-48B

Can anyone confirm my calculation?

I will be using 10 of them on a 48"x68" frame.

It should draw 103 watts for each strip, so 5 on each driver.
10x 103 watts = 1030 watts total

10x 17340 = 173 400 lm / 69 = 2513 PPF
2513 / 1030 = 2.44 umol/J
2513/ 2,78 m2 = 903,9 PPFD


Also, is it ok to use only the 3000k? Is it better to use some 3500-4000k in the package? Or even add some far-red and so on?
Is the drivers enough for 5 strips? I could go with the 600watts but I will have to dim, so less efficiency. What about yield? Will that be enough or I should bump 2 more strips over the same area?

As for comparison, a gavita @ 3ft above the canopy on a 4x4' grow tent... But the thing is, at 3ft, it's too close to the canopy, you get hotspot. Sad I can't find a PPFD measurements at 4ft!

Maybe check eb gen 3 strips as well? You may actually save some money and be able to accomplish a better spread. Or atleast have a better spread

Because of the single line array? So double the strips, 20 instead of 10. Looking at it atm

I'll go with the samsung, just checked the local price for the eb gen 3 and barely the same. :)

5 strips on an HLG-480 is 2 amps per strip. Those strips max current is 1.8 amps. I think you need more strips. Then again, sometimes I'm wrong.
That's why I wanted a confirmation with my calculation eheh

Current - Test2.24A

They can go to 2.24A... I won't be able to max them out... 11.2A total... Afraid of going with the 600... I'll have to dim and loose efficiency (i think?)

I just took a look at efficiency and well, not so much to talk about
Also, the 600H is 12.5A, so I'll be able to max out the strips... But how can I limit the maximum output? only by dimming? What if I overdrive them? 12.5a / 5 = 2.5A instead of 2.4... will it burn? So many questions! :D I'll run them on 230-240v circuit.

So I was planning 20 per 2x4 area run on a 240 driver for high efficiency on the 3k 90 cri and add the buddies as well for under the canopy

Do you have any red or simply the strips? I can see on a website : 1512pcs SAMSUNG LM301h 168pcs Epistar 660nm 24pcs UV 24pcs IR... They claim it covers 5'x5' using 600 watts but I doubt it... My goal is to use the same wattage as a 1000w DE but gain higher yield.. Less radiant heat & no bulb to change each few grows, easier to deal with humidity.

Are 10 strips going to be good to achieve that goal? Is it better to mix kelvin? 3000k, 3500k, 4000k. IR needed?
I'm down to 10 x 4ft samsung gen 3 and 2x hlg-600h-48b.


You said you were planning... Did you went ahead or still thinking about it?

So teknik did some tests on the 90 cri eb gen 3 and it has a wonderful spectrum nice amount of red. I think the 3k is more what I would need to run since my new grow will be a SOG no veg time. At most I am going to add some UV, and Some deep red for end day but other then that nothing else. The Samsung strips are great but i don’t want to supplement a ton. If you want something amazing look at cutter strips.

The way i see it is to go with 2700k 90cri and use supplemental blue/violet/uv to get it down to 3000k or so. It makes more sense than adding loads of reds to 3000k; blues are more efficient and handles heat better. My 2cts.

Op: you should not run strips at their max ratinng, the softer you run them the more efficient and the easier the thermal management. Try to run the strips at nominal for the diode: if using double row f-strips 4ft this will be around 55w per strip. This is the most important investment of your build

Try to run the strips at nominal for the diode: if using double row f-strips 4ft this will be around 55w per strip. This is the most important investment of your build
So I'm better to add 12 strips on two 480h-48b (6 strips on each 480w) and dim a little bit? I think I'm confused ahah

If connecting one strip on a 600 watts drivers, the strip will only consume it's nominal rating no? if the strip is 103w, it will consume 103 watts. Therefore, connecting 5 strips at 103 watts will consume 515 watts on a 600 watts drivers. 85.8% of the 600 watts (i didn't account for driver's loss %)

So if I try to resume what you are saying.. I should raise the number of strips and dim them a little bit to keep my PPFD value and keep a better efficiency on each strips? So to be crazy, I should go with 40 strips and dim them at 25%?

No, not dimming: just use more strips per driver, they will share the output when connected in parallel so 8x doublerow ff-strips would do fine for 60w per strip. Each strip (iirc) has 288 diodes, 0.2w nominal per diode. You can run less strips but they are relatively cheap so better do it right.

When you put just 1 strip on a 600-48b: that sttrip will draw whatever amps corresponds to 48V; probably too much. Avoid this by using A or AB type dimmer. They have onboard voltage control and can be adjusted to match the stripps better.

14 strips, 7 by driver, 480/ 7 = ~68 watts, total of ~960 watts, dimmable.
14 strips, 7 by driver, 600/ 7 = ~85 watts, total of ~1200 watts, dimmable.

Or, your described way, 8 strips / 480 watts, 60 watts. I think I'll go with that, ~30$USD each strip, not so bad.

I will order 16 strips then! Would you use a bunch of 3000k or mix with some 3500k/4000k? For full cycle. Or 3000k and add some IR and UV along the way?

I just find on a webpage:
"Plants and especially cannabis need most lighting during the flowering stage, so we`ll be using that as an estimate of how much area needs to be covered. A standard LED grow light must use more than 32 watts per square foot of grow space, but for optimum results it should be over 50 watts, up to 80 watts. "

According to this claim, I should put from 1475 to 2380 watts of led over a 29.5 sq ft area... Hum What? Using 16 strips and 2x 480 watts driver, I'll be at just over 32,5 w / sq ft... Is that enough? They don't even talk about PPFD/ umol and so on... Tempting to trigger "BS article" but well...

@Rocket Soul , do you think I'll be able to achieve the same result or better than my hps de 1k? :D On another article, they mention that LED is 38% more efficient than HPS

did u order strips in 4k + reds or 3k + uv?

no, only 3k, why? I saw Takeshy's thread and he was only using 3k strip...
Do you have any suggestions for UV supplement? I may add some along the way :)


As for the co2... I don't know, if anyone can chime in? But I doubt, 80w for each sq ft... It would requires 2880 watts for a 6x6, which is an insane amount of power for such a small area.
