DIY with Quantum Boards

Yea there's a whole industry around HID, to think it started when we used to MacGyver street lights etc lol. If your ever in the bulb section of a home improvement store it gives a good timeline of where were at. CFL, incandescent and LED but no COB LED screw in light bulbs in mass yet. I did spot some work lights that have COBs though in both round and board formats in the same stores.

I guess in a cash farming sense if your making bank why worry about efficacy or power bills or changing bulbs ? The money saved may seem minor to those that do.

The money saved is a big deal to me. I pay about half as much now in the summer. Less power to lights and less AC

you'll learn more here than from any Garden Guru... tell him to back it with science. That's how you find out who knows what they are talking about! Its only a fact when there's proof to back it up!

And HPS is dead and don't know it yet....lol!

I vegged too with closer to 3500 K when I needed an extra light. It seemed to work fine as long as you go 18/6 or 24/0. If you go 12 on and 12 off then the plant is gonna start to flower. I also do not have the highest level of expertise versus others here. I do have a Sensei who thinks pro growers only use HPS.

I am dying to see how everyone here is doing in Flower with the QB boards about 3 to 4 weeks down the road.

well, I can see commercial ops saving a lot of money with these! Not just the electric, but also reduced cooling expenses, which also reduces electric usage. Imagine an op running five hundred 1000 watt lights. replace them with quatum based lights using say 800 watts. 200 watts per light savings. times 500 lights, times 12 hours say, time thirty day....at $0.20/kwh would save about $7200 a month. Just on lights. now lets be conservative and say a 12% reduction in cooling needs. The promises of the LED revolution are finally here with the levels of light emitted vs the efficiency!

HPS=Plasma TV
It still works as good or better than any other TV/Grow light but they use alot of energy and make alot of heat. As energy rates keep going up, HPS/Plasma are disappearing faster and faster. Obviously Plasma tv's have a few years head start in this race to extinction.

If you think plasma televisions use a lot of power, you must never have met a large screen CRT computer monitor or TV screen. 19" monitor would pull 480W, and a 30" CRT could easily pull 1000W.

I am dying to see how some of these QB plants in flower look in a few weeks.

My short ryders are blowing up even in just three days since my last pics. Even though I'm a old school indoor grower back to growing with this new tech I can say one thing for sure. A plant will tell you if they like a light or not. Much more than theory crafting or using any kind of meter etc. More often than not the first single true leafs will yellow or twist from not getting enough light penetration. Mine are dark, healthy and flat absorbing the photons.

I also noticed something different from growing under one point of light vs this spread. The side shoots move out from under the big fan leaves instead of wanting to go strait up. Its a minor nuance but cool to me =0p

Why the hybrid approach? What problem is it solving better than either quantum boards or COB LED alone?

Or is it just for kicks? Nothing wrong with that either!

This should be way cool and I cannot wait to see QB mixed with COB. How about some red and blue LEDs? I think GrowMau5 tested those LEDs and said they had little effect.

Great post but that death mask thing still creeps me out a little. ;-)

If one is not too careful, something new could be learned doing something just for kicks. Just the act of trying a new angle on something stirs your creativity. Seeds came up in my houseplant years ago and I thought "maybe I should plant those"!
