With that setup I didn't use heat sinks only the 1/8" aluminum plate. So yes active cooling is required. If you want a stand alone unit then use heatsinks on neck of plate and it works well.

Shame that it has to be an either or thing. These boards would really fundamentally change the game if they had a $50 price tag. I suppose if I could choose one I would go for higher efficiency, as that would increase performance relative to price.
