there are several registered parties; libertarian, green, independent, etc. thing is, most of the money goes to donks and phants so they get the majority of the media air time. it's hard to get a new party going because to do so would require large numbers of peeps currently allied with Rep or Dem to "change" their loyalty...something most Americans aren't comfortable doing. less than 10% in the US are considered swing votes.

what i wonder is, when did the "party loyalty" concept became so entrenched in our social fabric? you can literally watch a politician who said one thing change their mind based solely on the fact that an opposing party politician now agrees, they come out and say the opposite. look at the dems with the increase in troop numbers issue for example...top level pols like pelosi and clinton said more troops just a year ago, now they say no.

what kind of insanity is this that a "party platform" is more important to maintain than ideals and goals?? why is the polarization of the public psyche so important to some of our leaders? i sometimes wonder if the whole party system isn't too antiquated to effectively render the will of the people, our society is so complex and multi-faceted..

yeah, i'll shut up now...hope the pre-rant part helps w/ your q!! :)

I believe the previous post was correct in the essence of the two party system, Follow the money. People are reluctant to give money to any group they know doesn't have a chance in an election. The dems and reps are so entrenched and organized, I can't imagine any outside group winning against them. I personally would rather see a system rather like Canadas, or even Britians where there are 4-6 different partys all exerting influence on the congress, or parliment, in fact I believe a parlimentary system to be superior as more different factions get a voice, and it is harder to corrupt. The two party system as we have now is basically a one party system with some name calling at election time! Can you see Bush trying to do prime minister questions`LOL~? Sometime watch C-span and the British parliment in action. When the members get to question Tony Blair for an Hour. It's called prime ministers questions. It gets pretty heated and Blair is a quick responder. He must have an astronomical IQ.

the whole party-loyalty deal honestly saddens me a lil. it seems like alot of us would rather pick a team, like in sporting leagues, rather than support policies that we actually believe in. and if our team wins (an election, etc.) we consider it a personal win, even if that means bad policies will be acted out.

that would be awesome if our prez had to go threw a question guantlet like the u.k.'s p.m. it would probably expose bush as the puppet he is.
