dont talk to police

no, not gonna see any fancy videos here. wish i had two.

anyway, watching episodes of cops, and just gotta say, there are some who have no concept of the constitution.

and there are those who are total professionals who should be commended.

but after watching some of these tapes, do not talk to them, period.

there are people on this show who have really had their rights violated.

for instance, a 70 year old drunk guy who was CALLED out of his house. had a permit to carry which really irked the "OFFICER" . then was CALLED out of his yard, and promplty arrested for drunk and disorderly.

totally innocent of any crime until they coaxed him out of his house.

not really sure but last time i checked, it was okay to be drunk in your house.

imagine what they would have done to this guy if he had a joint on him.

seriously, dont talk to the cops period. let them charge you for what ever, but immediately say you want a lawyer present.

and the next episode, poor brother (my word for black guy) had a helicopter on his ass for an argument with his girlfriend. she was white.

i aint no race hustler as you all know, but the brother was definitely discriminated against.

bottom line, if he hadnt spoke, he would have walked and appear to some stupid court date. instead, he was locked up.

dont talk to cops, innocent or guilty.

it is amusing/infuriating to watch all these people on 'cops' willingly give up their rights.

i don't think that shit would happen to many of us here in the politics section that are aware of our rights.

I was at a legalization rally today with hundreds of people sitiing in a circle smoking zoot and the police were really great.

I talk to police frankly about pot all the time and they're usually swayed by my decency towards them.

I have never seen an episode, but I can imagine those clowns go pretty far.

Good thread.

Remember kids, you never, ever have to talk to a cop if you are not under arrest.

You must comply with their orders, but you are not required to speak.

But if they want to talk, it will not be for your benefit. So dummy up; if that fails, lawyer up.

And if you do find yourself under arrest the first and last thing out of your mouth should be, "I want a lawyer."

Here's my COPS moment.

I won't go into all of the details, but I will say it involved fraternity brothers, beer, and a graveyard.

The four of us, three 'black' members and a pledge, scaled the walls of the local cemetery to drink beer.

That's all.

But apparently it scared the hell out of the pledge master who assumed we would do something horrible to his pledge. So he called the law on us.

While we're leaning up against a monument, I think it was a governor's grave-site; the coppers show up. We dive behind some huge chuck of marble and wait while they drive around spotlighting everything. They get bored and leave. We think.

So we get out the same way we got in. Over the wall.

Back at the car, a mob of cops are waiting. They want to know what we were doing in that cemetery. We denied it and they separated us.

My turn comes up and the cop starts with the questions.

My response, "Officer, if I understand my rights correctly all I am required to do is provide you identification, which I have done. I am not required to answer questions."

"We got us a SMARTASS here!"

Immediately I am surrounded by every cop on the scene, shining enormous Mag-light flashlights in my eyes while this sputtering, mustachioed ass-clown tees off on me.

I just smile and keep my mouth shut.

After a while they realized no one would admit to actually being inside the cemetery.

They let us go.

The next meeting of the fraternity was rancorous to say the least. :-P

bud, i grew up with and played sports with half of the force of the town i live in. several of them i have taught how to hunt and coached them in little league football, baseball and wrestling. my point is, i am intimatly familiar with them and their family history.

if they were here, at my house, on official business....THEY WONT SEE MY LIPS SEPARATE, other than to say i want a lawyer. dont talk to them on official business. talking at a picnic for charity is one thing, when they show up at your front door in uniform, mums the word.

trust me, this will be some of the best advice you will ever get.

i agree. people on cops are RETARDED. they almost always admit to their crime on camera. even when theyre trying to act innocent, they slip up and say something stupid. the trick is to not say ONE WORD(besides giving your name and stuff). let them work hard to convict you on collected evidence alone.

their job is to charge people with crimes, not someone you want to talk to unless your into getting charged with a crime, but I mean, don't be a dick and act normal and your all good.

There's something else to add here that I have not seen mentioned. If you do for some reason open your mouth outside of identifying yourself, DO NOT LIE. If you are caught and the LEO wants to press the issue, you will be fighting a felony charge.

Back to the basics though... keep your trap shut - there is little they can or will do to 'help' you.
