For example, research in Cape Cod has shown that overfishing (recreational, not commercial) of certain species such as striped bass has led to the collapse of coastal salt marshes. The predatory fish (e.g. striped bass) and crabs popular with anglers were the only thing keeping herbivore species in check, and their decline accelerated the pace at which the marsh vegetation was consumed. This is all the more significant because the marsh itself is an important nursery habitat for many species, including the predatory ones.

Snow ball, domino, butterfly; whatever you want to call it, humans will be the ultimate demise of humans.

Can we react now and make a change? Are we ultimately doomed? Is this another Al Gore hoax, meant to artificially inflate the fish market? Is this Obama's fault? Hillary's emails from Benghazi has killed all the fish?

I'm 50. Been fishing all my life. Tell the truth anymore I just throw a line and don't give a shit of I ever catch anything or not. I've only got maybe 20 good active years left. So, I think most of these gloomsday predictions if they ever really happen, will come after I can no longer enjoy this beautiful world. And I never had any children. Got several girls preg, first had an abortion. I do regret that. Another got preg and had a miscarriage. But anyway, my point is. I GOT MINE FOR THIS LIFETIME! Ha! That gloomsday shit is for young people and people with children to worry sbout!

Many people like to fish. Fish are fairly easy to catch, they taste good, and they are good for us. And the world population (of humans) is exploding.

Your point is well-taken. Too many people these days are irresponsible consumers. And it will be a miracle if people don't someday cause the destruction of life on Earth, one way or another.

But I think the real problem with over fishing is similar to the problem with SUVs: there's too many people in the world to fish and drive SUVs.

There is some population count that, if reached, will demand an impossibly small carbon footprint per person. But we may find a way to destroy ourselves before then.

They just upped keeper size and decreased the limits.. Where you around when keepers where 48? When I started they where mid twenties. Just pulled a 34 out of the canal.. I'm strictly catch and release.



They are still running if your planning on coming back @see4

I have a place on an inlet from the ocean in orleans cape cod and in 25 years I know there ain't no more crabs anymore in front of our place. Used to be free easy lobster bait for our traps but now there's no more. Oh well. Shit happens

Not sure I'm heading back towards Boston any time soon. I just bought another house in AZ. The weather is nice man!

I have no doubt that fishery in some regions on the planet have "bounced back from the brink" - but that does not explain the actual fact that the entire stock of fish on the planet is half what it was 40 years ago, and to the point further, bouncing back from the brink doesn't really sound like a ringing endorsement for ecological awareness.

To be honest, I agree. I'm not sure a pandemic is the "politically correct" thing to want, but either people need to change, or they need to die. Humans have become a virus, especially ecologically irresponsible ones.

But we just dug another pond on some family property. Make sure we have fish when we need em.
