how long does it take roots to dry out if they are in a grow system where there is no grow medium or the medium does not get moisture?

in a nft system that periodically waters, there is a time frame in which the roots do not get
any moisture. i am just asking how long will it take for the roots to dry because i am trying
to decide on my time intervals.

sorry if this is confusing but i am an absolute noob at growing. so if this doesnt make sense i understand because i have a lot of information about growing in my head and it
might all be getting mixed together. i have spent the last two weeks doing nothing but research. before work, after work, days off, anytime i have i spend learning more. it
has literally sucked me in. i cant get enough of it. i am not even close to begin growing but im so excited. i like how one other member put it; smoking marijuana isnt addictive,
but growing it sure as hell is! love it. haha.

i hope this kind of makes sense.

i DONT want my roots to dry out. i want to make sure they wont with whatever time interval i choose. i just want to make sure plenty of oxygen
gets to the roots without drying them out. with the way i am setting it up, the system will have plants in clay pellets inside a basket. roots will
grow out beneath the basket and into my nft grow system. everything is going to be homemade because i want to try my own methods out. its
actually a mix of a lot of other people's ideas. haha. the water/nutes will run for a period of time and then stop. then a while later it will run again
for a period of time and then stop. so on and so forth.

i am still in the developing/planning stage of my grow. i have not completely set my mind to what i am exactly going to do. and i wont be starting
for a couple more months. i also have taken in a lot of info and others experiences because i want to get my first grow right. i know things will
most likely go wrong somewhere but i am trying to do everything i can do combat that from happening.

ahh i see, ok well i actually have no experience with dwc and methods like that....i use strictly soil but what i can say is if your new to growing and you have a few months to play id go get a little bag of soil and learn the plant itself in the easiest growing medium first..couple cfls then when your ready to go with your real set up you have some xp and you will have a plant to start budding also..or even throw one outside..EVERYONE screws up the first grow no matter what you think you know its about practice not just theory..id consider myself an intermediate grower and i still screw up here and there, having a single plant to learn on first will give you a better chance when you do your real set up....personally i would have said my first grow was a success..18 super small plants got a few ounces i was happy...now looking back that was unsuccessful had i just tilled the soil better, added some bonemeal, a couple other things i could have turned that into pounds outside easily!! just stick with the basics and again i would try soil first its the easiest...any questions not specific to hydro or aeroponics and ill be glad to help pm me if ya need

thanks for the input. i will go ahead and try to grow one just to see what its like before i dive head first into buying hundreds of dollars worth of equipment. even though it will be well worth it.
