Dumb Question

I'm using 600w MH lights for veg but my ballast only works at HPS. It seems to be working fine though, am I missing something here?

Nope. MH works with MH and HPS ballasts, HPS only works with HPS because MH ballasts don't have an ignitor.

Just for classification purposes. You guys are saying I can use a MH bulb of the same wattage as an HPS, in an HPS socket and ballast without any side affect to the ballast?

I disagree. From my experience, my ballast got extremely hot and I noticed the MH bulb fluctuating in intensity. Why do companies manufacture HPS ballasts, MH ballasts, MH/HPS combo ballasts and MH conversion bulbs to use in HPS ballasts?

Just my opinion.

I respectfully would like to hear more opinions on this.

J2M3S: I think you raise a good point. I am also inclined to think this may be a marketing ploy to sell more ballasts to one person. Why sell one product, when you can sell them two. But more clarification would be nice to hear.
