Dust in my filter harmful to my fan?

I just got a new 6" carbon filter and a 400+ cfm 6" fan delivered. Everything looks okay but I noticed black particles on the bottom side of the filter, like maybe some charcoal was falling out in the shipping process. It is very fine though, I don't know how fine the charcoal is inside the filter. Also, if I reach inside the filter and touch any part of the inside of the filter I get a fine black dust on my hands. Is this typical of all filters or is there something wrong with this one. Will the dust get in my fan and mess it up? Should I return the filter or use it? Thanks for the help guys. O yeah one more question, can the fan be hooked directly to the exhaust flange or does it need to blow through ducting?

It's just charcoal dust from shipping. I wipe them down with a moist rag. But it won't do anything to the fan.

Thanks for the response man I'll wipe it down and set it up. These things are so much larger than I thought they would be.

I like to hang my fan and filter separate with a 12" piece of duct between. I do this so the filter can easily be removed when I need to clean the outer dust filter. I do this about every 8 weeks but should be done more in my case.

Larger the better I think. And just a reminder. For best scrubbing have it horizontal and as high in the area as possible.
