DWC An alternative medium than Hydroton?

Hi there,

I'm setting up a DWC setup and I need a medium to use in my net pots. Hydroton is only sold in huge bags and I don't need that much so was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a different medium?

some shops carry smaller bags [about 5lbs.] cost me 70r8 bucks

sunleaves rocks 6 bucks for 8L or 2 gal depending on your locale

Could I just use perlite or gravel?
