Ok so I decided to begin a small closet grow...
10g Tupperware container
170g Air pump & 100g Air pump ( I used to have big tanks and had them still)
Expanded clay (found some in the pet store meant for terrariums while I was buying new air black air line)
125w 6500k CFL
2 23w 6500k CFLs in a small reptile fixture (again I had this laying around and figured every bit helps)
Fox Farm Grow Big and Big Bloom nutes
PHup and PHdown
Cheap Hanna PH and TDS meters
I sprouted some decent bagseed and put them in rockwool. I didn't soak the rockwool long enough and had the PH bounce around a bit. I also think the terrarium expanded clay was a bad call. Even after rinsing it well there was a fair amount of debris still. Regardless the first 4-5 days went pretty well and the plants seemed happy. I used RO water but the ppms ran up on me a bit (300+) I think due to chasing the PH around with additives. Temperature was a huge issue with this setup as well and even adding frozen bottles to the tub it only lasted a couple hours at most. Ambient temp was near 80F... Waaayyy too high and I started to notice a small amount of brown on the roots.
So having invested this much into the project I figured I better just remedy this crap now.
New setup includes replaced the tub with two coolers to make a recirculating system. Bought a 300gph pump, tubing, fittings, 2 larger net pots since I decided 2 plants would be ideal for this size setup and some hydroton. Drilled all the holes and hooked it up... So far its holding 61-64F with only one frozen gallon jug in the rez!!!! Awesome! FYI the FoxFarm Grow Big drops your PH (at least mine) dramatically. Newb mistake I adjusted the PH before adding the nutes the rechecked and it was almost at 4.5! It's back up to 5.6-5.8 and the ppms are at 150 with just a bit of the nutes dripped in.
If this bagseed grow turns out well I'll prob move to some big boy seeds. =)
If I missed anything or you have any advice please offer it up as this is seriously my first attempt at growing and don't want to have a bad start!!!
