DWC Question

I've been designing a custom dwc garden to maximize my limited space and there seems to be conflicting views on whether to to have the platform secured to the reservoir or to have it float in the water.

Is there any specific advantage/disadvantage to either design?

Well, the only disadvantage that immediately jumps to mind regarding a floating platform is the possibility the vegetation may become too heavy at a certain point and sink the platform... a mounted or secured platform would avoid this problem.

Of course, you mentioned that this is a "custom" DWC system, so what you're building and what I'm visualizing (and I'm pretty fuckin' tore up right now, I've downed a few bowls of OG Kush in the past few hours) might be two completely different things. Having said that, I also thought that depending on what you mean by "secured", a secured platform may hinder your ability to add/change nutes, check water temp/ph/levels, etc. In order to recieve valuable advice it might be helpful if you post pics, or at least a good description, of the system you are building.

well all i meant by "secure" was a platform resting on the sides of the res. but this is what i have right now.

right now it's designed to float but i can easily mod it to hang on the edge. what that is is 3 layers of cardboard with the grains crossed for strength and wrapped in saran wrap and packing tape to water seal it. underneath i have styrofoam for added buoyancy. If floating becomes that much of a problem i can add stilts.

my concern is that because it's floating more of the roots will be submerged and won't be as well oxygenated, versus one that hangs on the edge of the container where the top portion of the root system would be very often exposed to fresh air.
