DWC Root Slime Cure aka How to Breed Beneficial Microbes

Hi, everyone!
I've been struggling with slime and brown roots for months. Now bewing my first batch of tea using ahornsirup instead of molasses (ordered one already).
Recently, I got a water chiller for 100 bucks, 5 gallon insulated bucket and can keep any res temp I want. Currently it's set between 64-66 degree. The tea is being brewed at 71-72. Should I increase the res temp to 71-72 before applying the tea, or just keep it at 64-66 and pour some extra tea?
i liked using southern ag fungicide for ease of use

now that you have a chiller, have you ever tried running sterile? peroxide, bleach, pool shock?

AG is way better and concentrated that Hydroguard, one bottle is on it's way. How much AG do you put in your tea?

I didn't tried to run sterile after chiller, as my roots are already damaged. I have HTH poolshock US version, do you think it's better to try out instead of tea?

P.S. Aren't Bernie's better than sterile in terms of root formation and nutrient uptake?

P.P.S. Do you have any idea of HTH proportions for 5 gallon bucket? It's powder.

Same stuff except GFF is 2600x more concentrated than Hydroguard.
GH also makes DefGuard which is the same concentration as GFF.
They market DefGuard to the "Pros" and Hydroguard to the consumer market.
I wonder why? ;)

Did you ever add any food for the SA fungicide? Bubbling with synthetics, I can't imagine there's much to munch on.

RDWC - this happened back in early February and I'm still fighting it. The plants died awhile ago and I haven't put in any new ones because no matter what I do (and I have done almost EVERYTHING) the slime comes back. After every return of the slime, I have drained and sterilized the system using H2O2, bleach, hypochlorous acid, and 99% isopropyl alcohol. It is white because there is nothing organic in the system. I have tried just plain RO water with nothing but hypochlorous acid. I have tried nothing but water with bennies (Orca and/or TPS Billions). I have tried nutrients with bennies (either just Orca or just Billions or both at the same time). I have tried water with ORP monitoring (keeping it between 300-400mv with daily HOCI adds). Most recently I have tried Ecofix and Southern AG GFF. But nothing matters....after a couple of days it will return. I want to get growing again, but as long as this stuff keeps coming back, I will not risk putting plants in the system. A lot of people on this VERY long thread (including the OP @Heisenberg) talk about roots with plants in the system, but I haven't seen anyone trying to defeat it in an empty (no plants) situation. I'm about to give up honestly because I have wasted so much time and money at this point.

Need recommendation on tea recipe since fungi.com is showing the mycogrow soluble as OUT OF STOCK. Here are the products I have on hand:

-Plant Success Orca
-Southern AG GFF
-API Ecofix

I can pick up some EWC although I don't have any hydro shops around me, so Amazon will have to suffice. Any help?

65°-68° pretty much the entire time that the brown slime has been kicking my ass. Previous grows my water temps would go as high as 73°-74° but I was using Orca (bennies) the previous....this time I tried to go sterile and got the brown slime....it has been a battle
I'm right there with ya. I'm probably going to give up on pure DWC and just go with a GH Waterfarm type setup where you still have a rez, but you dribble the nutrients over the top of a bucket of hydroton or even perlite, and let it drain back. Funny how many people used just one of your fixes and have no problems, but some of us can use one or all, and nothing works. Here's a quick video of a GH system.....

The battle rages on.....the first pic is the accumulation of white snot in my rez (mostly around the bulkhead fittings and filter screen). The second pic is the amount of snot that I rinsed off of the filter screen (in that bucket is a hypochlorous acid solution with an ORP of around 750mv). I know from this ongoing battle that even HOCI solutions up to 1500mv will NOT dissolve this shit. I wish my problem were just pythium that could be "solved" with a chiller. I have read almost all of this thread and it's kind of annoying how far it has wandered from the original post about brown slime algae.

is it possible that light is getting in somehow? I built a hpa system but was having snot issues like you’re having. Was pulling my hair out. Turned out that the table top and rez lid was not blocking all of the light. Couldn’t believe it. I blocked it all using panda film and problem solved. LEDs (if that’s what you’re using) are strong and penetrate plastics. Here’s what it looks like now. now.

Since I don't currently have any plants in the system, I also am not wasting electricity with having my grow light on. Grow light has been completely off since 2/17/24. In the meantime, the system has been completely disassembled and sterilized (read my post above for what I have tried) and reassembled several times. After my initial brown algae sliming happened, I upgraded my lids and net pots to the Current Culture ones just to eliminate the possibility that it was a light leak (original net pots that come with the Fallponics system are HORRIBLE). If you read the very first post in this thread, you will see that brown slime algae is not caused by the usual suspects (light leaks, water temps, etc.)

ah gotcha. Honestly, I was doing a search on orp and the last post you wrote came up. I had no intention of reading the entire thread (been down that rabbit hole too many times lol) and was just trying to help.

Nah bro…I appreciate the input. This brown slime is the worst shit ever! I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. Going to try this tea, but at this point I don’t have high hopes tbh.

As far as ORP goes, anything over 600mv will start causing cell damage to most living things (plants, etc) but NOT this brown slime shit

if I remember correctly, a guy named r.raider had a similar issue and turned out to his source water but…???

I tried teas and it caused me a mess with hpa. Ecofix and orca worked well but my best results have been with bleach or hypochlorous acid adjusted daily. But that’s my situation and I run areo.

I will say this though, I almost gave up. I mean I was right there. Spending weekends reading forums and all the pissing contests that came with it. Was uber discouraged. Then I tried a couple more things and boom. It all got sorted and now I grow amazing weed consistently. Stick with it bro. You’ll figure it out and have a crazy sense of pride once you do.
