Electricians Help Needed!!!

So the land lord knocked on my door the other day wanting his electrician to get down to where my dryer 240 outlet is. My land lord owns all 7 new homes in my area. The electrician has to get into all the homes. I told the land lord to make an appointment because I had to leave and I was in a hurry. I talked to the land lord later on and said whats the problem with the 240. I have a dryer running and it works great. I dont really have a dryer but I do have all 4 1000 watt hps lights running off of that outlet. I didnt want to let the land lord or the electrician in because that is where all my ducting and electrical go through the wall. Anyways, the land lord said that to be up to code and prevent fire hazard there has to be a second ground. Now, from my electrical experiance i know that a 240 outlet has a black and red wire. Theses are the lead wires (hot wires) and a white wire (neutral wire). This is all my outlet has is a red, black, and white, but i think he is saying I should also have a green. There is no green wire period so how would I make that work...(this is suppose to be the second ground or ground). I told the land lord my dad was a contractor and took care of it. I think he bought it. Please look at the pics below of my outlet and let me know what the land lord/electrician is talking about and how I can take care of it myself. Thanks.

Yup, when the house was built the electrician fucked up and didn't put a ground wire (green or bare copper) when required. That white wire (neutral) and the ground wire are actually bonded together in the electrical panel.

The electrician ( or land lord) has a right to come in on 24-48 hours notice (depending on where you live).

If your ploy doesn't work, you need to store your plants, tear your shit down and make any repairs needed.

Your plants can be stored for about 3 days without light (attic?) so try to schedule appropriately but yup, they're coming in.

You may need to make a bogus receip for your ploy and even then the land lord has a right to come in and make sure that the work was actually done.

Hey trent where is your panel box? I wonder how the house passed inspection if its not up to code all New houses should have 4 prong dryer hook ups instead of the standerd 3 prong they originally have red and blk (hot leg) white (neutral). copper or green (ground). I tried to ask you in your other thread where the panel was but its a mad house over there.good luck..............Jmac

dude what i would do if i were in your situation is this. techead nice thinkin about tearin everything down @ storin. but what i would do is:
-take down everyting and give whats left of wall new paint.
-cover up holes for ventalatiion with bookcase etc and put in fine china etc so the guy wont move it.
-hire one of YOUR own guys for like $60 to fix the problem. its pretty easy and you might be able to do it your self by buying a book or of the int. me and my dad are doin it to this spare house were fixin up to sell. were just replacin the whole outlets including drier.
-have the landlords guy come in and take a look so as he will not be in there long time snooping around.

put them in your bathroom for a while. seel up all the cracks. im not sure about the vent problem due to the smell? you will have to figure that one out on ur own.
it sounds like lot of work. and it is. the idiots that built the house screwed you over. im sorry to hear about your situation.

and remember, Twisted Sister rocks!

I am an electrician. From what I see it looks fine and safe. It appears to me there is ground wired pulled from the main panel to this box. The green wire is screwed the box instead of to the outlet. This is perfectly fine and meets code where I live in NY. When you screw the 240 receptacle into the box.....it is now grounded by the same green wire that is screwed into the box. It is difficult to see from the picture if the green wire is just sitting in there or it is scewed in. Just make sure that green wire is screwed into the box. If it isn't you can pick up a ground wire and screw at home depot for about 20 cents.

Hey I'm an electrician, Your going to need to run new wire to be exact you'll be running 12-2 NM Sheathed Wire. On a washer/dryer setup the 240 is a dedicated circut, it has it's own braker, by the NEC ( National Electricians Code ) you must have it on it's on circut and breaker for fire safty reasons. Without some knowledge on wireing houses I recomend you hire a electrician to bust that one out. Little word of advice, most electricians smoke shit loads of pot, just gotta find the right one!

Good Luck bro!

hey trent i jsut saw this thread man. and th ebest thing to do would be to probabbbly tell the landlord that you had to move the appliances out because of your dad, cover your venting hole through the wall with something like a bookcase mentioned above....anything will work really as long as it is big enough to discourage someone from moving it around, and call an electrician to do the repairs for you, then call your landlord and have em come over to look at the 220 power.

but deff try that clone on his doorstep to see if your landlord is cool with the smoke growing or not. either way he wont be cool with you cutting holes from the garage to the laundry room. so hide that lol

It's National Electrical Code not National Electricians code (we engineers have to follow it too!).

It's size 10 wire (might actually be size 8 wire) not #12 (Hint: the plug says 30 amps and under the NEC that requires a minimum of #10). You do not need to run a new NM wire, only a ground wire (permmisable under Sec 250 of the NEC however state and local codes could be different).

It could actually be the case that the ground wire is shoved up inside the wall and the pot smoking residential electrician was just being a lazy bastard by not hooking it up.

I dont see a green wire in there and it looks like it may be a plastic box,not sure.trent wheres that panel at,if its close you could easily do this job your self. It used to be up to code but new code needs to be four wire and four prong outlet instead of three red, black, white and green........Jmac

its a thing with construction. about 3/4 of construction workers burn down. I know because ive been in the field and i have family still in the field that dont smoke. it annoys them when fellow workers ask them if they wanna spark up. lol, i told em their in the wrong field of work for a non-toker. lol
